Usefulness is doing rightly by yourself and others. —Mary Baker Eddy GLIMPSES OF TH E PAS T By CAROLYN LLOYD «- Just recently an old friend and I met at her old family home for the first time in years. It was a sad time, for she had lost a brother and we remarked that it is a shame that so often old friends get to gether only in times of tragedy. Being together, though, brought memories of the carefree times of a by-gone day and of that younger brother who used to wait on us and share our fun. Those memories had a dream like quality. Could it really have been we who lay in bed while the cook brought our breakfast, picked un the discarded dresses from the floor, and inquired what we would like for lunch. Today my friend is married, keeping house, teaching school, and worikng toward a mas ter’s degree in night and Saturday classes. I stay pretty busy myself. It has been many a day since eith er of us has had breakfast in bed unless we were sick. As a matter of fact, eating in bed has lost is ap peal, especially if one has to get up and do the dishes afterward. Remembering those days, though made me realize that we adults are sometimes hard in our judgment of youth. No doubt our elders shook their heads and said, “I just don’t know what is going to become of those lazy girls when they have to go to work.” Now maybe it would have been easier to face the tasks of today if we had never known those moments of ease; yet many of the hardworking adults of today were pretty trifling in their young er days. It certainly isn’t a good idea to let anyone grow up with out accepting some responsibility and learning the value of work; but it is foolish to expect or to want the young to see life as noth ing but a tour of duty. In that case there would be little point to being young. I always did feel sorry for the Greek goddess Athena, who sprang full grown from the head of her father, Zeus, chief of the mythical gods. There are many people who think that early rising is in itself NOTICE OF SALE OF VALUABLE PROPERTY Under and by virtue of that certain resolution adopted by the Dare County Board of Education at a duly assembled meeting there of held on the 2nd day of Decem ber 1958, and pursuant to the pro visions of Section 115-126 of the General Statutes of North Caro lina, and amendments thereto, the Schoolhouse and Schoolhouse Site, hereinafter described, being in the opinion of the said Board unnes essary and undesirable for public school purposes, the undersigned will, on Tuesday the 3rd day of February 1959, at 12:00 o’clock Noon, at the Courthouse Door in Manteo, Dare County, North Car olina, offer for sale at public auc tion to the highest bidder for cash the buildings and site herein after described: All that certain tract of land, together with the buildings and improvements thereon, lying and being in the Village of Manns Harbor in Croatan Town ship, Dare County, North Caro lina, adjoining the lands of C. DARE COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION BY: Mary L. Evans, Secretary T-l-9-4tc a virtue and feel superior to those who like their morning's sleep. Fact is, they just can’t sleep for one reason or another or have to get up because of their jobs and it irritates them that someone else can. They are the ones who call you up at the crack of dawn and exclaim, “Did I wake you up? Why I’ve been up for hours.” It doesn’t seem to occur to them that you were working hours after they were snoozing away the night be fore, and that you have had exact ly the same number of hours’ sleep. This may seem far afield from a meeting with an old friend, but the point is this: now that I am an adult, my days are filled with things I ought to do, and if I lig late abed, I must make up for it somehow—and that is as it should be. I am glad, though, that nobody expected me to behave like a grown woman at sixteen. For heaven’s sake, let’s not deny youth the priv ilege of being young—it only hap pens once.
