Page 8-THE NEWS-December, 1984 Charlotte Jewish Federation rM*:rr,,u Cont’d from p. 1 For the first time, donors of $500 + to the 1985 Federation/ UJA Campaign will be able to make their pledge in honor or in memory of an individual, an institution or ein organization. A specially designed card will be sent in acknowledgement of the donor’s intent. “We feel this is a marvelous way for someone to show ap preciation, affection or respect,” said Ron Katz, chair man of the Men’s General Campaign. “The initial response has been very positive. People have chosen to honor their spouse, to remember a beloved friend or relative and quite a few have asked that their pledge be in honor of their children. It seems to be their way of pass ing on their commitment to the Jewish tradition of Tzedakah.” The acknowledgement card does not indicate the amount of the pledge. Swimmer Roast Cont’d from p.l on raising dollars. Without him there would be no project as we know it today.” Swimmer’s work with the conrniunity extends into many other institutions including the JCC, of which he is a member of the Board, the Hebrew Academy, and the Federation, of which he is past president and “eternal” worker in the annual campaign. “December 15 will be a celebration of affection and joy,” said Greenspon. “Just like Harry, it will meike every one who comes in contact with it feel great.” JEWISH SOCIAL SERVICES WE’RE HERE TO HELP ... Now the discus sions focused on the programs and services and plans for the future of each institution or organization. “The purpose of these face to face meetings is for both the representatives and the com mittee members to come away feeling accountable for the allocation dollars,” said Don Bernstein, Allocations Chair man. “That happens best when ideas are shared and committee members leam first hand about the functions of the recipients.” The third evening focused on reports from members of the Federation Board recom mending allocations to the 23 other, smaller recipient agen cies. The “evaluators” had been assigned to specific reci pients last December. All dur ing the year they received and studied mailings and some were even contacted in person. Now they had written their findings and presented them to the committee. Finally, the committee reviewed five new potential recipients whose ap plications had been scrutiniz ed by the chairperson of New Allocations, Vicki Hopkins. And then it was over. There had been an additional $18,000 for local needs based on the in creased philanthropy of con tributors to the 1984 Cam paign. WTien the final total of the dollars allocated was made, it was within the amount available, and a collec tive sigh of relief for a job well done went up. From the Com mittee, the report went to the Board for approval on No vember 19. The final approved Allocations will appear in next month’s issue of the “CJN.” With the 1985 Campaign under way, the allocations pro cess has begun again. Evalu ators are being assigned and a committee is being chosen to work all year toward next November’s positive outcome.
