We compile it from material sent to the Piedmonitor and the interline department. Neither Piedmont nor the Piedmonitor can assume any responsibility for irregularities that may occur in connection with offers that are described. Compiled by Cherryl Shamel If you’re looking for travel bargains — who isn’t these days? — a trip to Sapelo Island, Georgia is a must. A nominal fee of $2 includes a delightfully sunny 30-minute boat ride from Darien and a leisurely-paced guided bus tour of the major points of interest on the island. Surrounded by pristine salt marsh and deserted white sand beach, only a handful of visitors are permitted each week. Because of the is land’s over-abundant wildlife, regulated deer and wild turkey hunting is permitted during fall and winter. Anyone can join a deer hunt, if he is one of the lucky ones to be chosen by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Make application through their Atlanta office. Each hunt lasts three days, and there’s one each month from October through January. Wild turkeys are trapped from December through February. Visit the University of Georgia Marine Institute, which is located on the island to study life in the salt marsh, and drive by South End, the 15-bedroom, 19-bath mansion that has belonged to the R. J. Reynolds family since 1934. Tours of Sapelo Island are given only two days a week, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Reservations are required. Call (912) 264-7330. Savannah has charm Located not too far from Sapelo Island is the charming and quaint town of Savannah; and one of the South’s most elegant and popular springtime events is the Savannah Tour of Homes and Gardens, scheduled for April 7-13. Begun in 1934, the annual tour draws visitors from throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. The city’s cobblestoned riverfront is lined with cotton warehouses that have been converted to shops, restaurants and night spots. Watch ships from Asia, Europe and the Orient glide up and down the Savannah River. Visitors are invited to a free performance of the Savan nah Symphony Orchestra, which is performed on the Riverfront Plaza. Walking tours are $10 per ticket and reservations are required. For a brochure with additional information plus a listing of area hotels/motels, shops, restau rants and cultural events, write Tour of Homes, 18 Abercorn Street, Savannah, Georgia 31401; or phone (912) 234-8054. Visit Vinings Village Also in Georgia, tucked away in a pictur esque Atlanta niche, is the unique village of Vinings, where turn-of-the-century homes have been converted into a variety of shops. Spend delightful hours shopping and strolling among treasures of both past and present where antiques range from porcelain plates of the 1700’s up to freshly-waxed yew wood tables dating back 100 years. Most shops are open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. While you’re there, plan to dine in the Old Vinings Inn. Vinings Ski Ridge, a relatively new skiing center, gives skiers plenty of room to practice their sport anytime from September to April. They are advised by five Piedmont em ployees. David Lockman, Bill Shields and Ken Nail from the general office and Ron Dodson and Joyce Garrett from the central res office have given about 130 hours each of their own time to help the young company in all areas, from formation, to production, to marketing. They also offer guidance in accounting, ad ministration and other fundamental business principles such as productivity, competition, profit planning, personnel management and even government regulation. In other words, a JA company teaches all phases of business by allowing the students to learn by doing. They organize a company, char ter it, sell stock, elect officers, determine product line, finance the operation, meet the payroll, engineer, manufacture, advertise, sell, bank, and at the end of the year, liquidate by paying dividends to stockholders when they’ve been successful or, if not, explaining why.
