8 Piedmont f First Officer Bernie Gross and his father. Dr. Frank Gross, hold the plaque they received honoring the commemorative glider flight they made on June 29. Employees show 'we core' Veteran Flight Attendant Lacy Woodcock (ILM) had a heart attack May 24 while working a flight from ILM to MIA. The cap tain made an emergency landing at SAV where Woodcock was quickly taken to a nearby hospi tal. His wife arrived late that evening. “I knew absolutely no one in the Savannah area," she wrote Leonard Martin, vice president- passenger services. David Mayberry, station manager at SAV, called Mrs. Woodcock the next day to offer his assistance. “He was so cordial and so genuinely interested, I knew he must be a friend of Lacy’s,” Mrs. Woodcock said. “I later found out they only barely knew each other.” Woodcock, who has been with Piedmont 25 years, underwent bypass surgery and stayed at the medical center for three weeks. ”I am absolutely amazed at how small a large company became when he needed the moral sup port so vital to his recuperation. He received cards from locations all over the system . . . David said that ‘no thanks is necessary. Lacy is Piedmont family and we take care of our own,' ” Mrs. Woodcock wrote. “The Mayberrys opened their home and hearts to me and made me feel like one of the family . . . Their concern was evidenced by their many calls and visits to the hospital,” she said. “I know none of this kindness is required as a part of the job. I feel that David Mayberry acted well above the call of duty in taking care of a member of the Piedmont ‘family.’ He was a real example of the reason my husband is so proud to be a part of Piedmont Airlines.” Woodcock is doing well and hopes to be back on the job this fall. PI pilot and his father Take part in historic flight Fifty years ago, the Sky Ghost — a Gross Four-Place Glider which at that time was the largest glider in the world — made its 1935 Akron-to-Columbus flight, marking the first time a multiple- passenger glider carried U.S. Mail. On Saturday, June 29, 1985, a two-seat Grob 103 re-enacted the trip. Bernie Gross, a pilot for Pied mont, was at the controls. Gross’ father, Dr. Frank Gross, was involved with both flights. Already recognized in 1935 as an authority in the design of gliders, Dr. Gross drew the plans of the four-place glider which pioneered multiplace passenger gliders. On the anniversary flight. Dr. Gross occupied the glider’s pas senger seat with his son at the controls. Gross observed that the problems of the original venture were solved by modern radio communications. The Sky Ghost was built of wood, stiff linen cloth and steel: the Grob 103 is made of fiberglass and graphite. Gross, who has been with Pied mont two years, is a first officer on the B-737, based at GSO.
