The Memorial Day Service at Camp Sapphire was dedicated to the memory of the sixteen Ecusta employees who made the supreme sac rifice in World War II. Harry H. Straus, Jr. delivered the memorial address, an excerpt of which follows: "In the spirit of the day I would like to repeat the words which our President, Mr. Harry S. Truman, included in his Memorial Day Proclamation. 'This sacred day is a fitting occasion on which the people of our nation, all of whom, directly or indirectly, have been bereft by war’s terrible toll, may appeal to Almighty God for help in turning the steps of the world to the paths of permanent peace.’ As you know, I spent three years in the Army during World War II, and, as an ex-buddy, I am saluting the men whose mem ory we are honoring today.” Those taking part in the program beside Har ry, Jr. were Rev. W. G. McFarland, R. F. Ben nett, E. B. Garrett, Jr. and the Honor Guard of Ecusta Veterans, consisting of "Speedy” Jones, Joe Perry, Eb Morrow, Coman Hamilton, Mar shall Loftis, "Buck” Albert, Ralph Morris and Harvey Souther. Mr. Garrett was in charge of the program, and the music was furnished by Brass Quartet of the Ecusta Band, under the direction of Harold T. Casterton. Mr. Bennett introduced the speaker.
