Page 2 February 15, 1988 Black History Events on PBS By DIANA LOWERY Associate Editor In recognition of Blaci History Month, the UNC Center tor Public Television will be airing shows for the enhancement ol Black Histoiy throughout the month. In today's society as well as in the past, stereotypes have existed concerning blacks. On Februai^ 15 at 10 p.m.. Ethnic Nolions: Portraits of Prejudice” will air chronicling 100 years of America's racial stereotyping of blacks. On February 19, there will be a Black Issues Forum titled "Tlie Role of Black Colleges anJ Universities". The discus sion will tbcus on three areas — the history of black colleges and universities, the institutions' changing function and their ideal future role. Also on February 19. the documen tary Boogie in Black and White will air. It will include both the movie and inter views with the people involved in its mak ing. Boogie in Black and White is a tribute to a film that once circulated in only a few of the black audience theatres in the Carolinas. On February 22, Madame C.J. Walker: Two Dollars and a Dream will air at 10 p.m., chronicling the lives of Madame Walker and her daughter. A'Lelia. In 1910, Walker made a small investment in a company specializing in black hair and skin care products and went “Boogie in Black and White” on to become America's first self-made millionairess. Through interviews with Walker's friends and co-workers and a collection of stills, film and music from the period, the documentary offers an in sightful portrait of black America from 1867, the year of Walker's birth, to 1931, when her daughter died. In the way of music. Great Perfor mances honors jazz master Dizzy Gillespie and his music in Wolf Trap Salutes Dizzy Gillespie: An All-Star Tribute to the Jazz Master, to be aired February 26 at 9 p.m. Cissy Houston Also on that day. internationally- renowned choreographer/dancer Chuck Davis and his African-American Dance Ensemble will broadcast a half-hour film at 10:30 p.m.. titled Chuck Davis, Danc ing thorugh West Africa. It focuses on three Senegambian ethnic groups — the Wolof. Mandinka and Diola — and paints MADAM C. J. WALKER 1867-1919 a portrait of traditional dancing and dan cing grounds in West Africa. The last show on PBS concerning Black History Month will be Cissy Houston: Sweet Inspiration, tra^cking her success in both gospel and rhythm and blues. This will air February 29 at 10 p.m. Madame C.J. Walker died on May 25,1919. At the lime of her death, she had acquired a vast empire in excess of one million dollars. Among real estate holdings (left to her daughter) was a $250,000, 30-room mansion, Villa Lewaro, built in New York in 1917. “Black Inventions” O Oo G> o 129 So. The total number of black inventions will never be known. In the 1870’s, the number of patents given to blacks increased.
