Faculty HD^PENmos New faculty, staff begin at Chowan In Memoriam Dr. Earl H. Parker died at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, N.C. August 5 . after a lengthy battle with cancer and other complicat ing problems. Dr. Paricer was a professor of religion and philosophy at Chowan College and lived in Murfreesboro. A native of Rocky Mount, he came to Chowan in 1969. The funeral was held on August 8 at the Murfrees boro Baptist Church. Dr. Parker is survived by his wife and two daughters. He will be missed by faculty, staff, and students. Dr. Marilyn Channell- Purdy, professor of English, died unexpectedly August 30. From Canada, she had served on the faculty since 1989. A memorial service was held September 15 at St Thomas Episcopal Church in Ahoskie. Dr. Mary Ruth Coleman Dr. Mary Ruth Blackwell Cole man has joined the faculty of Chowan College as chairman of the Department of Developmental Studies, a new department estab lished this year at Chowan. Dr. Coleman brings to Chowan a wide range of experience in the area of developmental studies, and has most recenfly completed a term as guest lecturer at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. She holds the doctorate in philosophy, education from the department of special education and literacy studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; the mas ter’s degree in education with emphasis in math and science from East Carolina University; and the bachelor of science degree in education from East Carolina University. Coleman has published numerous articles on developmental studies and serves as associate editor of the Joumal for the Education of the Gifted at UNC-Chapel Hill. She previously served as an instructor on the continuing education faculty at East Carolina University, and as director of Scholastic Edge, a private educational consulting firm serving school systems and individ ual students. Her publications include “The Second Decade Study: An Evalu ation of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics,” co authored by Dr James Gallagher. Dr. Coleman will present semi nars in the coming months at the Association for Citizens with Learning Disabilities and for Eastern AHEC in Greenville on dyslexia. She is married and resides in Washington, N.C. Dr. David Brian Gowler Dr David Brian Gowler has joined the faculty in the Department of Religion and Philoso(*y at Chowan College as assistant professor of religioa Dr Gowler comes to Chowan from Berry College in Rome, Georgia, and previously taught at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He holds the B.A. in religious studies from the University of Illinois, the Master’s of Divinity and the Ph.D. from the Southem Baptist Theological Seminary. He also completed university study at Cambridge University in Cambr idge, England where he studied with the Reverend Dr. Christopher C. Rowland (Jesus College) and the Reverend John Drury (King’s College). Dr. Gowler is married, and his wife, Rita Gowler, holds the B.S. degree in horticulture from the University of Illinois. Dr. James Edwin Rogers Dr. James Edwin Rogers has joined the Depart ment of Fme Arts at Chowan College as professor of music. From Daleville, Alabama, Dr. Rogers holds the B.S. degree in music education from Jacksonville State University and the master’s degree in music with emphasis in education from Georgia State University. He also holds the Ph.D. in education with majors in music education and secondary education from the University of Alabama. Dr Rogers has fifteen years of experience as a band director in public education. As professor of music at Chowan, he will teach music theory and applied instru mental music and direct the college stage band. He and his wife, Janet, reside in Murfreesboro. Mary Jo Byrd Mary Jo Byrd joined the staff at Chowan College as Associate Dean of Student Develop ment. Dean Byrd comes to Chowan from the administrative staff of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is from LiUington, N.C. and holds the B.S. degree in psychology (summa cum laude), minor in French, from Gardner- Webb College. She holds the master’s degree in student personnel services from the University of South Carolina. She previously served as director of housing at Mars Hill College, assistant to the director of admis sions at Campbell College, and as dean of admissions at Tift College in Georgia. As associate dean of student de velopment, Byrd will supervise all female residence halls and their staffs, stressing the educational nature of residence hall living. She will serve as resident director for Jenkins Hall, and wiU be the advisor to the college yearbook, Chow- anoka. “Much of my professional experience has b^n at small colleges, so I am looking forward to working at Chowan,”states Dean Byrd. “I am anxious to be of service to all students and their needs, but my particular focus is to address women’s issues. I hope that our female students will see me as a source of information and as a means to express their concerns.” “We in student life services are here to facilitate the total educa tional development of every Chowan student, whether male or female, commuter or resident, and whatever race or nationality they may be.” Kelly Brame Kelly Brame joined the staff in the office of student develop ment at Chowan College as director of campus ministries Brame is from Durham and re ceived the B.A. degree in biology with a minor in psychology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He was awarded the Master’s of Divinity from South eastern Seminary, and previously served as a campus ministry intern at East Carolina University in Greenville. In his position as director of campus ministries at Chowan, Brame will serve as director of the Baptist Student Union, and coordi nate the activities of all the reli gious clubs on campus (Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Voices of Inspiration and other clubs). He will also serve as advisor to the international students on campus and as coordinator of the intramural sports program. The director of campus minis tries is also available to provide personal and pastoral counseling to students. Brown Retires Bob Brown has retired from Chowan College where he served as professor of music for 27 years. Brown taught music, and directed the college stage band at Chowan, and professes to be a self-taught trumpet player Brown inspired music students and delighted audiences for years. Alison D. Boeshe Alison D. Boeshe, A.T..C. has joined the faculty at Chowan College as athletic trainer. She will also instruct the courses in athletic training in the department of physical education. She holds the master’s degree in education with emphasis in athletic training from Old Dominion Uni versity in Norfolk; and the B.S. degree in physical education with emphasis in sports medicine also from Old Dominion University. Boeshe previously served as a supervisor and instructor at Hamp ton University in Hampton, Va. where she provided supervision in athletic training principles.
