Thursday, Octobn* 1, 1964 THE DECREE Page 5 Birth Of A New Sport At Wesleyan . . .This past Wednesday, Sep tember 23, twenty boys showed up for the first soccer practice under the new leadership of Coach William O. Music, Jr. Other boys are coming out every day and, yes, there are a few drop ping from exhurtion. The first few days of practice consisted of much running and an acquain tance with the basic fundamen tals* of the game. The rules of Jhe game will be taken up Monday along with scrimmaging for positions so there is still time for you to become a member of Wesleyan’s first soccer team. Coach Music seems to be. mix ing the hard work of conditioning with the satisfaction that the boys are receiving from learning the fundamentals of a hard and rugged game. The first game is away with St. Andrews on October 13, fol lowed by another away game with Campbell on October 17. These two games should give our team enough experience to make a fine appearance at their first home game against Pembroke state College on October 24. When so many boys show such enthusiasm and determination to work hard and to make Wesleyan a competitive college, the very least that we the student body can do is to support our team with attendance and encourage ment. Along with their hard work and our support,, our athletic teams should make fine showings this year. SCHEDULE Soccer: Soccer: Tues. Oct. 13 Sat. Report Baseball In 1956 Dr. Bauer was Interviewed recently and asked to give his views on the baseball team for the 1965 season and also to sum marize last year’s team. Dr. Bauer said that our great est weakness was defense. This was due basically to inexperi ence. Errors hurt as considera bly, continued Dr. Bauer, and we gave up more than 2 1/2 runs per game because of our errors. The well-liked coach continued by saying that our team played very well accordingly and that and more practice we had some close games which shows that we do have good po tential. He closed by saying that he wished the team could have won more games, as everyone else does, but the team showed up real well and that he was very pleased with its perfor mance. Turning to this year’s team, Dr. Bauer said that the big hitters such as Reeves and Sey- bert, would be good potential for this year’s season. He ex plained that experience was a necessary factor in making a good team and that last season gave us such valuable exper ience. He went on to say that there were several games that we lost be only a slim margin and only because of errors. This is where improvement can l>e made for this year and it should give us higher hopes of victory in the future. Dr. Bauer closed by asking the students for more support in 1965. He said that school spirit makes a team perform better when the going gets rough, knowing that there is someone, and a lot of them, wanting you to win. MIZELL'S INC.
