PHOTO: ROBBIE TEI8LET By ROBBIE TEASLEY The Focus Workshop, "Your Financial Future," was held on March 24 in ASM 141, at 12:00 p.m. William H. Hardy from the Consumer Credit Counseling Service, Fayetteville, presented the work shop . Hardy explained how to begin getting credit and the importance of keeping good credit. He also explained the system used by credit bureaus to determine one's credit rating. By ROBIN STILWELL On Friday, April 8, W. S. Hunter, recruiter for the North Carolina Highway Patrol, was at WCC to speak about the employment opportunities with the unit. Opportunities included trooper and telecommunications operators. The telecom munication operator position is a "sit-down job" said Hunter. Classes helpful to this position would be clerical skills such as typing and computer cl asses. Public speaking is also very helpful, said Hunter. Students interested in working with the Highway Patrol should contact Norma Dawson for an application at Ext. 725. By NATALIE GONZALES On Wednesday, April 13, Carl Brow, counselor in Student Development, presented "Japan: A Three-Year Perspective." The presentation focused on Brow's experiences while he lived in Japan for 3 years During Brow's stay he taught English and American culture to the children of Japan. Brow was introduced to the idea of teaching in Japan by a professor at ECU. The Japanese government provided for Brow's transportation. By SCOTT ERVIN The WCC Golf Team, now in its eighth season in the Eastern Carolina Community College Athletic Conference (ECCCAC), is gearing up for the conference championship. With the help of Rick Atkins and the staff at Lane Tree Golf Club the team should have a shot at the title, according to Coach David Deakle, instructor in the Business Department. The conference is made of 2 divisions,, the Nicklaus and the Palmer, the latter being the stronger of the 2, Deakle said. The season consists of 5 matches and a conference tournament to be held this year at Silver Creek in Morehead City, May 15, 16. The team has done well in the past finishing 4th, 5th and first in the conference in 1989-90, Deakle said. The team consists of Chip Spiron, Kevin Walling, Doug Herring, Scott Jones, Ken Crocker, and Sam Jones. Chip Spiron, contending for medalist honors, is within 2 strokes with 3 matches 1 eft. Tennis team fares well By SCOTT ERVIN The WCC Tennis Team finished the season tied with Cape Fear as conference champions, according to player Samuel Gibson. Coached by community volunteer Cynthia Cunnington, the team posted these seedings: 1-Jay James 2-Les Kramer 3-D.J. Joyner 4-Julie Wass 5-Dan Mitchell 6-Samuel Gibson 7-Heath Shumaucher 8-Butch Cassidy The season record was 9-1. "We had an excellent year, and we are favored to win the tournament," said Gibson. The 4-team tournament played at UNC-W included WCC, Cape Fear, Coastal, and Sandhi11s. James won his seed in singles and Gibson and Kramer won their seed in doubles competition.
