PIOTO; UIH lOR By KAREN LOTT Humanities 101: what is it? Why do I have to take this course? These are questions students in Humanities classes ask when they find themselves taking HUM 101, the Humanities in a Technical Society, a requirement for technical students since 1985. According to Shirley Boyd, Head of the Mathematics/Science Division, the humanities course meets one of the social science and humanities requirements set by the Department of Community I lackiie at Bordei luttfactnrlBg Colleges, now called the Community College System. The Humanities course was the brainchild of Becky Morse, then a Director of Literacy in the Continuing Education Department, and Shirley Boyd, then the Vice President for Instructional Services, now called Academic Affairs. In the summer of 1994, the humanities classes were moved to the Liberal Arts Department because of Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) requi rements.
