12 WCC CAMPUS VOICE - MAY 1. 2002 WCC again exceeds blood drive goal ByJ. AZURE SHANKS and KIZUWANDA SMITH Do you know your blood type? Are you type O, A, B, or AB? You could have found out on February 14, 2002, at Wayne Community College (WCC) when students, faculty, staff, and visitors donated 54 pints of blood. The Blood Drive was held from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., in the Student Union. In November of 2001, the goal was 40 pints of blood. WCC exceeded that goal with 55 healthy pints from 60 donors. Also Human T-cell Leukemia Virus Antibody (tests for an antibody to human T-cell leukemia) and Human Immune deficiency Virus Antibody (tests for the AIDS virus). Also, Rapid Plasma Reagin (screening for syphilis), and Alanine Amino Transferase (test for a liver enzyme that is usually elevated when a person is exposed to hepatitis). This semester the goal was increased to 50 pints of blood, according to Don Best, Director of Blood Services From 65 students, faculty, staff, and visitors, 54 useable pints of blood were collected. Donor blood undergoes 9 different tests by Federal law to ensure healthy blood. The tests include hepatitis B surface Antigen (tests for hepatitis B infection). Hepatitis B Core Antibody (tests for past hepatitis B infection), and Hepatitis C Virus Antibody, (tests for antibody to hepatitis C virus). Other tests included Group and RH (to identify the donor’s specific blood type), and an Antibody Screen (screens for red cell antibodies which may adversely affect patients). Because it was Valentine’s Day, donors received a white beanie teddy bear with a heart and the words “ Blood Donor” embedded on it, along with coupons to Quizno’s Subs and Dominoes Pizza. The Red Cross will hold another blood drive on Wednesday, April 24, 2002, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Student Lounge, Learning Center Building. People who would like to donate blood or who want to find out more information can call the local Red Cross of Wayne County at 735-7201.
