BAILEY BUGLE. BAILEY, NORTH CAROLINA. JANUARY. 19^7 RobertHorne Reploces Resigned COACH ENTERS NEW CAREER ACCEPTS DUTIES JANUARY 28 Teacher, students’ friend, devoted ■. family man, and coach, W. H, Westall sub mitted his resignation earlier this month to be gin a new career in sell- , ing Compton's Encyclope dias in either Wilson or Greenville. Westall began teaching and coaching at Bailey in 1953. Since then his teams have played in the 19$h county finals and partici pated in the state dis trict play-offs in the same year, won the county championship in 1955, and tournament championship in 1956. A LosingVictory Tonight would decide Bai ley’s and Middlesex’s coun ty rating. The boys’ teams were tied for top; the girls, for second. At stake were the games and the sportsmanship tro phies , Three years ago Bailey Feed Mill gave two sports manship trophies to these schools—one for the boys’ team, one for the girls' — to be given at each game to the teams showing the best sportsmanship. The teams would be judged by the referees after each quarter. After the games, the sportsmanship points for both boys’ and girls' teams would be tallied. The teams scoring the most sportsmanship points would receive the trophies and keep them until the next game between the con^eting schools. Winner of either Robert C, Horne will re place W. H. Westall as coach and teacher on Janu ary 28. A native of Wilson, Horne attended Charles L. Coon High School, where he was an outstanding athelete. He has served with the Armed Forces, and will graduate from Atlantic Christian College at mid semester. A young man in his mid 20's, Horne will gain hiS' first year of teaching ex perience here. He will teach civics, world his tory, United States histo ry, and. two classes of physical education. Principal M, W. Weaver states that "Horne was highly recommended as an outstanding coach and teacher with good conduct and habits and a fine char acter," trophy, four out of six times, would be the perma nent possessor of it. Out of 5 games, Bailey boys have won it 2 times and Bailey girls have won it 2 times and tied with Middlesex twice. On this particular night, fans for both teams were wild I Excitement mounted in the hearts of every player ! In both games the scores near the end were close—girls UO to 14.2; boys, 58 to 55. Jfi.nutes ticked away,..seconds.,,a buzzer sounded, signifying the games were over. Flocking toward the scor er's table, the crowd was anxious to hear who won PAGE 11 C00c h WH. Westol 1 TGQmsGiveCoQch Farewell Party Both basketball teams, the cheerleaders, managers, scorekeeper, and bus driv er, s iff prised former coach, W, H, Westall, with a going-away party January 3 and gave him a gift. Immediately after the boys’ basketball practice, the remaining members swarmed into the gym, pre pared refreshments, and set up a record player while the coach was in the dressing room. As the coach aocsnded from the basement, team members saog "He’s A Jolly Good Fellow". On behalf of the team members. Co captain Jimmy Dew present ed the coach a gray lamb’s wool sweater and matching socks. Faye Lamm, girls’ co-captain, remembered the coach's wife with a box of Revelon bath powder. After the presentation of gifts, everyone was served cookies, drinks, crackers, and potato chips and danced to a variety of re cords , the trophies. Principal O'Neal of Mid dlesex announced, "The tro phy for the best sportsman ship shown in the boys' game goes to Bailey." A burst of applause came from the crowd; then a hushed silence. "The girls tied for the other trophy." Loud cheers followed. Bailey had lost the games; but they had won in sports manship.
