JANUARY. 19^7 PAGE 18 Tedcher-^Grddudtes Of Bailey School- — —by Jevel V'Jhitley Among the teachers at Bailey School are three of its former students; Miss Rachel Bissette, seventh- grade teacher; Miss Edith Farmer ninth-grade teacher and math instructor; and Mrs. Helen Privette Murray, public school music teach er; Miss Bissette graduat ed in 1933; Miss Farmer, '30; and Mrs. Murray, 1927. This will be Miss Bis sette 's eleventh year teaching at Bailey, Migs Farmer’s thirteenth year, and Mrs. Murray's sixth. "There were not half as many activities then as there are now. Glee club was the main club in school," they said. All were members of it, "The Nash County Field Day was an enjoyable event which occurred once a year, they added. Ribbons were given in English,- arithmetic, music, and other subjects to the students who won in the contests given between different schools. Miss Farmer recalls having won a blue ribbon on arithme tic at one of these con tests, She was also voted the best-all-rouad students in the seventh grade, Mrs, J. P. Underwood, pre sent sixth grade teacher, taught Miss Bissette and Miss Farmer in grammar grade. Mrs. Howard Farmer, present French and English teacher, taught Miss Bis sette French and English in high school. Miss Bis sette took seven years of piano. The grammar grade library was the sc^no of the 1930 banquet. The '33 banquet was in a Bailey store. Says Miss Farmer, "We had to have ours at school* because of the depression. We sold candy to make money for the banquet." Miss Bissette and Miss Farmer were the only ones to graduate fEcai college in their class. 14rs. Mur ray says that she and another girl wore the only lege in her class. Miss Bissette' went to school with Keith Vick Glover's mother and since has taught her two daugh ters, She also attorided school with Mack Eatmon's ■ father and since has taught Ty Boyd, now tele vision announcer. Miss Farmer taught Doris Harper and Ann Robertson, who later taught at Bailey, While attending Bailey, Mrs. Murray received piano awards different years. She studied piano and mu sic at Virginia Interment College and at Meredith College. Diiring '''‘orld War II she was recreational hostess at Fort Bragg.
