‘Back to School’ is a humorous diversion by Christen Hayworth Back to School, starring Rodney Dan- gerfield, is a humorous and somewhat bawdy exaggeration about a middle-aged multi-millionare, Thomlon Melon, enter ing a university as a freshman. Director Alan Metter carries Melon’s antics on campus to the extremities of hilarious sar casm. Metter also incorporates a serious side with the personal conflict between the father and his son who also attends the same university. Metter and screenplay writer Steven Kampman use Melon's humerous esca pades to show their audience a very sarcas tic view of university life. Melon, to start off with, knocks out a few walls of the dorm to make his own pad, complete with hot tub and kitchen, which he shares with his son and his friend. Could you see this at Meredith? How about police officers par tying along with college students like a bunch of over-ihe-hill fraternity boys? Speaking of fraternities, I loved the view of Greeks that Metter and Kampman show us with their incredibly ludicrous party themes and “too cool” guys. After a hard exam given by your favorite professor, you will enjoy a look at the various stereotypi cal professors. 1 laughed the snob, the beauty, and the lunatic. These are all the hilarious exaggerations of creative minds working together. Kampman and Metter obviously have had some on-campus experience in order to present the audience with such humor. They really touch on the many aspects of campus life and run with the possibilities. Metter and Kampman touch a more serious and yet still humorously corny tone when the audience watches the relation ship between father and son begin to slightly falter simultaneously with their relationships with their prospective girl- friends, I saw the parallelism of the rela tionships between Melon and his Eitglish professor and Melon's son and his dream- girl. The not-so>coincidental similarity of the couples’ problems emphasizes the exaggerated humor of the film. However, Metter did allow his audience to feel the seriousness of the two loves by using clo- seup shots to emphasize the actors’ emo tions. 1 noticed that when the actors were experiencing any emotion other than jovial silliness, Metter. used closeups and softer lighting. Metter also uses a variety of open and closed form scenes. He uses the open form when filming the campus to show the realistic aspects of the popdated environ ment, and he uses the closed form to illus- tate Melon’s confinement when his pros pective girlfriend catches him in the hot tub with several half-nude coeds. I believe that Metter and Kampman could have produced just as good of a movie if they had deleted some of the crude dialogue and nude shower scene at the beginning of the movie. 1 personally prefer not to hear smut coming from the mouth of a man who is old enough to be my grandfather. Of course this movie is not the worst one guilty of bad language and it is not so crude that I would persaude others to miss the good humor that is pre dominant. If you are looking for a movie • with a good soundtrack, hilarious antics, some clean and naughty humor, and a little romance then by all means go see Back to School. This movie has the single ambition of making you laugh without asking you to ponder over the plot Watch and enjoy!
