According to North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) officials, the proposed Morehead City- Atlantic Beach bridge, in conjunction with the new northern approach, will carry 40 percent more traffic than the existing drawbridge and northern approach. In a traffic control study conducted by its office of pianning and research, the NCDOT compared existing traffic operating conditions at the US 70/24th Street intersection in Morehead City with projected traffic flow for the proposed highlevel bridge and northern approach. “We feel very good about the results of this study,” said Bill Riggs, regional planning engineer with NCDOT. “There are several advantages to the proposed traffic operating plans over existing condi tions.” Riggs explained that proposed one-way traffic operations on 23rd and 24th Streets, the northern approach to the new bridge, will move Artistic Rendering of Morehead to Atlantic Beach Bridge. stay on red until the gates are reopened. The study also indicated that traffic flow will be improved by eliminating the opening and closing of the present drawbridge.
