Telephone Plans Expansion, Improved Services ELIZABETH CITY - As hub of the Albemarle and gateway to the fast-growing Outer Banks, Elizabeth City is a focal point in Norfolk Carolina Telephone Com pany’s program to improve and expand its telephone services this year. Terry F. Daniels, com mercial and marketing manager, said that in ex cess of (ULmillion, twice the amount spent in 1978, has been budgeted in 1979 for improving telephone ser vice. More than $7 of that was already spent through June of 1979, he said. The provision of ad ditional long distance cir cuits between Elizabeth City, other Albemarle communities, the Outer Banks and population carters outside the area is a key part of the overall project, Daniels said. More than (1-million is being spent to provide these ad ditional circuits. Daniels said, “Additional long distance cable routes are being installed for Elizabeth City, Edenton, Woodville, Hertford, Welch, P.iney Woods, Sunbury, Moyock, Shiloh, Sligo, South Mills and Weeksville. “A cable route providing an additional Elizabeth City-to-Rocky Mount link was recently completed and increased Elizabeth City long distance facilities.” Radio channels, an alternate to cable circuits, are being provided for long distance service in most of the Outer Banks. Daniels said, “A total of 120 radio channels between Elizabeth City and Outer Banks communities, 36 channels between Buxton and Waves, and 24 channels between Elizabeth City and Mamie are being established. Additional channels also are being established between Elizabeth City and Norfolk, Va., Richmond, Va., and Washington, D. C. Some of the new radio and cable circuits were in service before the end of June. Others are scheduled for service in September - October." Daniels explained, “At the beginning of this year, we had 124 call ticketers, which are a vital part of the long distance network. In April, we added 40 call ticketers, in early June we added 40 more and we will add 24 more in September or Oc tober at a total cost of (353,000. This is an 83 per cent increase in ticketers and should certainly in crease our capacity to handle long distance calls.” While all this capacity is being added into the long distance telephone network, additional local central office lines for new customers also are being provided. The following local cen tral office lines for new customers already have been installed this year: 400 lines in Elizabeth City, 400 lines in Manteo, 200 lines in Hatteras, 200 lines in Weeksville, 600 lines in Lease Sale Is Planned The New Orleans Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Office, Bureau of Land Management, is planning an oil and gas lease sale (Proposed OCS Sale 56) of tracts in the South Atlantic. These tracts range from offshore North Carolina to offshore Florida. One of the first steps in the leasing process will be an environmental assessment. To that end, the Bureau is conducting a series of meetings to give the public an opportunity to present its concerns regarding the proposed sale and its possible impacts. To be certain that necessary emergency power is available for telephone communications in case of the loss of con ventional electrical power, Vail Services Held Mrs. Sandra Hare Vail, 33, died Thursday night in her home in Charlotte as the result of an accident. A native of Chowan County she was the wife of David Vail and a daughter of Worth H. and Elsie H. Hare. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church, a registered nurse, and served as a houseparent at Boys Town in Charlotte. S. at Haywood Technical In- number of Plant Depart ment employees now working in the Norfolk Carolina service area has increased by 50 this year and will increase by another 10 before year-end. Installation of some equipment, which wouldhave been installed earlier had it not been for strike-delayed shipments from manufacturers and sup pliers, is expected to be completed in October. Norfolk Carolina is ex pected to merge with Carolina Telephone late this year. Both are subsidiaries of United Telecom munications Inc., headquartered in Kansas City, Mo., and members of the United Telephone System. Employees of both companies are working together in this accelerated program to improve service in Norfolk Carolina. stitute, located in Clyde. The Wood Products Department of Haywood Tech sponsored the seminar for the benefit of people working in the lumber in dustry and in particular, saw filing. The purpose of the annual seminar is to present new information to saw filers and to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas. Haywood Tech has a complete training program for the sawmill trades, leading to a diploma or certificate: a Sawyer program which is nine months in length; the Saw Filer program which is six months in length; the Lumber Specialist program which is nine-months, with an optional fourth quarter. The Lumber Specialist curriculum includes planer mill, lumber grading, millwrighting and dry kilning. Additionally, the Wood Products Technology program is a sever-quarter associate degree curriculum designed to prepare people for entry level mid-management positions in the sawmill industry. Closely related to these curriculas in the Wood Products Department at Haywood Tech are two regional programs in the Agricultural and Biological sciences Department: Forest Management Technology and Fish and Wildlife Technology.
