Page 6-B r RECOGNIZED Petty Officer 2nd Class Marie Chappell is congratulated by her commanding officer, Capt. Francis J. Farino prior to receiving the Navy Achievement Metal. Gets Achievement Award Petty Officer 2nd Class Marie Chappell, USN, from Tyner, was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal in a ceremony held recently at the Armed Forces Staff College, Norfolk, Va. Petty Officer Chappell came to the Staff College in January following a two - tour of duty in Rota, Spain. She serves as a mess management specialist (i.e. food service) and has been assigned the additional duty of career counselor for enlisted personnel. Chappell received the award for her work while serving as the senior mess management specialist of the Satellite Dining Facility, U.S. Naval Hospital, Rota, Letter To The Editor Dear Sir: It’s bad enough that 27 men have aborted any chance - at least for now -of ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment in North Carolina. It’s bad enough that after Melvin Daniels conducted his “informal poll” he decided that it was “time to put (ERA) aside”. And it’s bad enough that the general attitude of our legislators seems to be one of getting “the ERA problem’’ out of their hair and moving on to more important matters. All of that angers me. But something else angers me even more. Apathy. On Sunday, June 6, there was a pro-ERA march and rally at the State Capitol Building in Raleigh. It’s estimated that 8 - 10,000 supporters turned out. Out of that crowd of 10,000 I saw five supporters from the Tri-county area (Chowan, Pasquotank and Perquimans). In that capacity, she provided superior customer service and exceptional meals to patients and hospital staff personnel, which had a significant impact on the morale and welfare of those she served. Chappell was recognized in the citation ac companying her award for her leadership, resource fulness, initiative and dedication. Petty Officer Chappell is a graduate of Chowan High School. She attended Grayson County College at Dension, Tx., prior to joining the Navy in 1975. My sister, her seven year old daughter and myself were the “delegation” from Perquimans County. One lone couple carried Pasquotanks’ banner. I didn’t see a single soul around representing Chowan County. Standing in the mist of that vast crowd my feelings were mixed. Being joined together in a just cause and striving to reach it was nothing short of elation. You could feel our strength! But at the same time I was embarrassed and mad that none of my neighbors turned out to help reach that goal. When the going got tough they gave up. I’m truly sorry. They missed out on something very special. The battle is not over. We will win - and be stronger for the fight. We got the 19th Amendment ratified. We’ll get the 27th ratified too. E£A won’t go away.
