Barker House historical notes Marguerite McCall Prior to reporting January and February activities, a tabulation shows 23,584 visitors came into the Barker House during 1985. Registrations indicate all fifty States represented and twenty four foreign countries, including people from Europe, Africa, Asia, Central and' South America1,' Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and British Columbia. Thisf cosmopolitan list of current' visitors would seem to. rival the ira when Edenton’s port trade brought crewmen here from ex otic lands. Visitation in January 1986 was 812, with 85 hearty folks braving the cold to take the toia*. An attractive, bronze plaque, listing Edenton Historical Com mission chairmen and given in memory of Walter Abbe, III, was mounted recently on the staircpse wall in the Barker House. Spaces are provided for adding future chairmens’ names. Carpentry repairs have been done on the Zeigler House this winter, as a stabilization effort un til later, complete restoration is undertaken. Also, the plaster in the Iredell House dining room was painted in January. Fifty-four history lovers—the largest enrollment to date signed up on January 20, for the Barker House History Class, taught by Phil Evans. Because of size, we have .been meeting on Monday evenings in the Old Chowan County Courthouse. The semester concludes on March 10. Plans for the 1986 Symposium have been formalized. Co sponsored by the Edenton Historical Commission and North Carolina State University, this year’s topic will be “Growth and Change inHistorical Towns”, with architects and city planners scheduled as speakers, an ar chitectual walking tour of Eden ton planned, and Symposium par ticipants treated to meals in historical settings. In addition, a special dinner is on the agenda to acquaint local people with Symposium members. The dates are May 14-16, and advanced registration is required. February visitation was 893, with 143 taking the guided tour. A school group of sixty-six, from Trigg Elementary in Pasquotank County, toured on February 18. Sheila Hufton demonstrated the art of making cornshuck mops. Several youngsters were in terested in knowing whether Sheila used the mop to scrub her floors at horn?. She answered truthfully. No! A three week guide training pro gram was conducted in February. The itinerary consisted of lectures by staff, State Historic Site per * AT LAST - YOU GET A BREAK And it'* about time tor the Internal Revenue Service to do something tor folks who want to lay something away for retirement. Field trips were taken to Newbold-White House in Perquimans County and Somerset Place in Washington County. On February 20, Sheila Hufton, Ruth Rose, David McCall, Peggy Wright, and I took a staff develop ment trip to the Lynnhaven House in Virginia Beach. Members of The Association for the Preserva tion of Virginia’s Antiquities open ed the house especially for our Edenton group and provided us with a guided tour. Wanda Miller, a former guide on our staff and now a volunteer at Lynnhaven, ar ranged the tour. She also hosted our group and the APVA officials to a lovely luncheon in her new home. As Penelope Barker, I gave an off-site program to the Coast Guard Officers’ Wives’ Club in Elizabeth City on January 14. Again in Elizabeth City on February 11, as Ann Durant a seventeenth century Albemarle woman, I presented a program for Museum of the Albemarle’s Taste of History series. Our site manager, Linda Eure, is currently designing exhibits on North Carolina Historic Sites for the Legislature Building in Raleigh. A historic tidbit: "The State Gazette, Edenton, N.C. August 29, 1798. Mr. Lailson most respectful ly informs the Ladies and Gentlemen of Edenton, that he will perform on Thursday evening next... The Famous Horse Bucephalus, will leap through a Hogshead with both ends closed with paper, in full speed, at the command of his rider...Tickets to be had at Capt. Cox’s Tavern.” The first Bucephalus was Alex ander the Great’s favprite charger. This one mentioned in the article may have been far more interesting, however, for no matter the reported size of the old hogsheads, it is difficult to im agine horse and rider leaping through one. Exciting events took place in "Old Edenton”. • Forffiaying, * ; For Selling... Classifieds Offer Unbeatable Bargains!
