Of these <3 farms, a soil scientist made a detailed soils map of 33. This soils map Is made on an aer ial photograph of the farm and shows types of soil, degree of ero sion, slope of the land, and present land use of the area Included in the farm. The different classes or types of land are shown by differ ent colors, so that a farmer has a complete survey of his farm at his fingertips. Each class of land is described briefly the side of the map. The remaining 39 farms already having agreements with the Soli Conservation District and others which are subsequently signed up under the District program will be soils mapped as rapidly as the soil scientist, who began work in Cher okee County In September, can gel to them. Tho Soil Con servation Service office is in the Court House. The motto of the Soil Conserva tion Service is "To use every acre of land within lta capability and to I treat every acre according to Its need." The soils map showing the land's capability and lta nee da to a large extant, is therefore the heart of the District program. By using the soils map, the farmer and the .technician - of the Soil Conservation Service can make short and long range plans to get the best from the land while main taining and improving the fertility and productivity of the soil.
