He like many pro ducers is seeding oats follow ing his tobacco crop. Thb will help reduce diseases retard erosion and give beauty to his fWMr. C. T. Dean, County Extension Chairman, is also impressed with winter cover crops. He says, "As one rides across Franklin County dur ing the months of May, June, July and early August, to me there Is nothing more beauti ful than a good crop of too??" co This scene changes In late August and September as the once beautiful fields change to ugly fields of empty stalks. I guess the reason this scene looks so bad to me at thto time of year i? that 1 know this Is lust a breeding place for Insects and diseases that can cause trouble for next year's tobacco crop. To regain the beauty in our Franklin County tobacco fields and reduce pests at the same time follow this simple four-step program: (1) Cut tobacco stalks (2) Row out tobacco stubbles, (3) Disk under old tobacco crop re fuse, and (4) Seed a winter cover crop."
