The steamer Sylvan Grove will give a moonlight excursion to Caro lica Beach on Thursday night. As the, moon will then be nearly full, a pleasant trip may be safely calcu lated upon. There will be music for dancing on the boat and at the Beach. There will be a grand excursion on the Passport on Thursday next to the Rocks, Southport, Fort Caswell and the Blackfish Grounds. Risley, of this city, was married at Southport, on the morning of the 3d inst., to Miss M. H. Potter, a daughter of Capt; W. J. Potter, and sister to Capt. Leta Potter. We wish our clever young friend and his charming bride many years of unalloyed wedded bliss. City Court. There was a small crowd assem bled at the City Court this morning and a docket that showed up . three cases, which were disposed of as fol lows: Marshall Kernan, disorderly con duct, discharged. ' Jno. Rowe, drunk and disorderly, $20 or 30 days. Dan Kelly, unlicensed dog, judg ment suspended. " ' The Cardinal and His Suite. Cardinal Gibbons left here this morning on the Carolina : Central R. R. for Charlotte, jn a private car, accompanied by Bishops Northrop and Haid and other, dignitaries of the church. They will visit St.' Mary s Abbey, in .Gaston count y Charlotte, Asheville, the Warm Springs and other points of interest. The distinguished party occupy a private car, which.has been placed at their disposal throughout the en tire trip by the R. & D. R. R. Co. The Ever Popular Beach. Up to this date last year the steamer Passport had carried about 9,000 passengers to Carolina Beach. This year, to the same date, thej Sylvan Grove has carried 14,700, a gain of more than 50 percent. It is possible, and perhaps probable, that the gain will be 100 per - cent, this year on the last. This shows the continued popularity of this de lightful resort. It will never lose its favor with the public, at all events not while the present courteous management directs its destinies. Reduction in Express Charges. Mr. J. R. Williams, the curteous and efficient agent of -the Southern Express Companyin this city, tells us that there has been a very con siderable reduction in express charges to and from points reached bv the Atlantic Coast Line, Pied mont Air Line and Seaboard Air Line Railways, on fresh meats, dressed poultry, butter, vbeer soda water, fruits and vegetables. Fuller particulars may be obtained by call ing on Mr. Williams. . - - r . This reduction will be highly ap preciated by merchants and house keepers, who will- welcome every movement that lessens the cost of articles of food that enter into the daily consumption of people in Wil mington. . . Personal, i Capt. David Pender- of Tarboro, is in the city on . a yisit to his daughter, Mrs. W.1L D'eRosset, J r. Adjutant General Jones and Mrs; Jones went to the Sound yesterday 1 afternoon,' ' The General will remain at his headquarters- in, camp and Mrs. Jones is the guest of Mrs. J. J Lippitt. .. '" Mr. C..H. Polley, a Wilmingtonian but for years past a resident of Monroe, and a prosperous merchant in that town, is here on a visit to his brother, Mr. E. G.. Polley. He favored us with a visit this forenoon Mr. W. H. s Chadbourn, Jr. , and his lovely bride. Miss Jennie E. Chenev. that was. of Boston,, have arrived in the city after a 'wedding tour through Canada and the upper Easterly winds have . prevailed here alt of the week but it does not seem to have seriously affected fish ing parties aV the; Hummocks. small party of gentlemen went out early this morning with Capt. John son in his sharpie and they had good luck -t in "trolling. One gentleman stood onthe bridgeand 'fished with sand fiddlers and he caught a lot of fine sheephead. ; ' :- J 1 The First Message To-Day J The telegraph line to the Sound and yie Hummocks is now: up and in successful operation. The first message was - sent over r it to-day. The. office here is at Front street de- pot, in the ticket office of the Sea- coaORwith-MrrO. E. Hines as operator. Mr. G. H. ' Hammell is the operator at Wrightsville and Mr. . A. Best at the Hummocks. This Will greatly facilitate the hand ling of the twenty or more trains Which will be run each day . on the road during the Encampment. Street Cars This Afternoon. , Four cars for the street railway were shipped last week, before Mr. Bellamy left New, York, and two of these will in all probability arrive here this afternoon, on the through freight. If they do and we think there is very little doubt that they will get here then they will be at once, put on the track and it is pos sible that they may make - the first run to-night. The other two cars will follow close on the heels of the first two and they, may. arrive here to morrow afternoon. 7 The Crescent Opera Troupe. The opening of the operatic, sea son at the Opera. House fast night was not signalized, by a large house but the audience made up in appre ciation what it lacked in size. "The Chimes of Normandy," which was presented on this occasion, is famil iar to all opera goers. It was well presented and the company in its rendition established themselves on a very satisfactory basis, it is a good troupe throughout, and there is not a chorus girl in it - who is not really excellent. , The leading mem bers of the troupe, male and female, are very good and the chorus, in ac tion and in rhythm, is as good as the best that we have seen here in years. To-nignt, by request, tue same piece will be presented again and if the merits of the entertainment is taken as an indication there will surely be a full house. The "Bohe mian Girl" and the 'Mascotte" are on. the; repertoire for other nights this week and for the purpose of en abling those at the Sound and the Hummocks to attend these perform ances round trip tickets, including admission to the Opera House, wil be sold for 75 cents. A train will ar rive here just before the" perform ance and leave shortly after its close. . " .- - - - ' Audit and Finance. The Board of Audit and Finance met in regular session yesterday.
