Deaths and Funerals Russell's Funeral Home 822 Carl Russell Ave. 722-3459 IA.LLENTINE James "J.B.M Howard Ballentinc Jr. of 1381 Dodson Drive in Atlanta, formerly of Winston-Salem, died June 20 at Crawford Long Memorial Hospital. He was was born to the late James Howard Ballentine Sr. and the late Alma Jones Ballentine. He was a member of St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church and a veter an of the United States Army. He received his early education in the public schools of Winston-Salem. He received his bachelor of science degree from Winston-Salem State University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. His career as a mathematics and science teacher touched the lives of many students in the public - schools of Winston-Salem. He was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, holding memberships in the Psi Phi Omega and Eta Chapters, the Winston-Salem State University Kimberly Park Alumni Chapter and the Sportsman Club. He also held member ships in several teacher organizations. He was an avid sports fan and a previous football athlete in the Army and in college. Ballentine is survived by his beloved wife, Jacqueline Anderson Ballentine; his daughter, Yvonne (Pylas "Bill") Ballentine-Herndon; a son,> James D. Ballentine; grand daughters, Shan trice Baker and Shantel Ballentine; grand son, James D. Ballentine Jr. of Baltimore, Md.; sisters, Lil ? lie B. Williams and Ruth B. Ledbetter, both of Winston Salem, and Yvonne (Otis) B. Fluker of Lexington, Ky.; brothers, Brian (Phyllis) B. Ballentine and Bruce (Nina) B. Ballentine, both of Winston-Salem; brother-in-lW, Albert (Jeanette) H. Anderson Jr. of Atlanta; extended brothers and sisters, Malachi Lewis and Alma Lewis of Phoenix, Ariz., Samuel (Rosa) Lewis of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. and Vivian L. Cox of Tbscon, Ark.; two uncles and three aunts; several nieces, nephews and cousins; plus many other relatives and fiiends. Mass was held June 24 at St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church, with the Rev. Lawrence J. Hunt and Dea con Curtiss Todd officiating. Burial followed in Piedmont Memorial Gardens with full military rites. Russell Funeral Directors handled arrangements. JACKSON Elease Lucas Jackson of 2900-C New Walkertown Road died June 27 at the Oaks at Forsyth. She was a native of Darlington, S.C. and had lived in Winston-Salem for more than 56 years. She was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, where she was the Mother of the church, a member of the Missionary Group and the Senior Choir. She was a devoted homemaker and a member of the Eastgate Senior Citizens Club. Jackson is survived by two sons, R.C. Eddie (Daisy) Jackson of Winston-Salem and Willie (Maggie N.) Steven son of Washington, D.C.; five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; one great great- great-grandchild; a sister. Thelma (Buster) Arthur of Lydia, S.C.; a brother, Berkley Lucas of Lydia, S.C.; devot ed nephews, Odell Lucas of Mitchellville, Md. and Geoi^e Davis of Decatur,- Ga.; a devoted niece, Carthonia Gilliam; dear friends, Katie Gates and Virginia Bailey, both of Win ston-Salem; plus many other relatives and friends. Services were held June 30 at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, with the Rev. Charles Gray officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery Russell Funeral Directors handled arrangements. MCTEER Kathleen Betty McTeer of 4216 Viking Drive died June 24 at North Carolina Baptist Hospital. She was a native of Beauford, S.C. but had lived in Winston-Salem most of her life.' She was bom May 2, 1948 to Anna Thompson and the late Ben Small. She was a member of S house Temple C.M.E. Church. She was a grad uate of Carver High School, Class of 1966, and attended Winston-Salem State University. She was employed by Fairchild Industries, Be lk department stores, and was a part time attendant at Lawrence Joel Coliseum. She was a parent booster for the Tiny Vikings Football Club and was the for mer director for their Dancing Boots. McTeer is survived by her children, Anthony Bernard McTeer and Anna Michele McTeer, both of the home; her dear mother, Anna Lee Thompson of the home; one brother, Joseph (Louise) Middleton of Winston-Salem; one sister, Jessie Mae Banner of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two devoted nephews, Spc. James Banner of Ft Hood, Texas and Hay wood Middleton of Winston-Salem; a devoted niece, Sharon. Stewart of Winston-Salem; devoted friends, Doretha Reid, Margaret Lindsay, and James and Vina John son; plus many other relatives and friends. Services were held June 29 at Shouse Temple C.M.E. Liberty St. 9*""* 723-5508 SHEPHERD Ruby McGill Shepherd of Tri City Nursing Home died June 21 at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. She was a native of Monroe. Shepherd is survived by her sister, Rachel Harris of Winston-Salem; plus many other relatives and friends. Graveside services were held June 25 at Evergreen Cemetery. Gilmore's Funeral Directors handled arrangements. ISAAC Willie Mae Isaac of 3717 Appomatox Drive died June 21 at N.C. Baptist Hospital after an extended illness. She was a native of Gastonia and the widow of the late Lewis Isaac Sr. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. Isaac is survived by one son, Robert (Cleta) Barren of Winston-Salem; a brother, Lewis Smith of Winston-Salem; six grandsons, four granddaughters; seven great-grandchil dren; one niece; one nephew; many cousins; plus many other relatives and friends. Services were held June 26 at Friendship Baptist Church, with the Rev. S.E. Tyndall officiating. Burial fol lowed in Evergreen Cemetery. Gilmore's Funeral Directors handled arrangements. COUTHEN ~ ' Raymond Couthen Sr. of 5050 Queens way Drive died June 22 at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Forsyth County. He was bom Nov. 11, 1940 to Sam and Louise Couthen. He attended the local public schools and was a graduate of Carver High School and Winston-Salem State University. He completed advanced study at the School of Music in Nashville, where he was awarded a diploma. During his life, he was awarded a number of citations for his music and community activities. He was president and founder of Ritz Auditorium, opened to the public for religious and worship services. He was inducted into the Thomas Dorsett Music Hall of Fame in 1992. He was a music arranger and songwriter. Among his many composi tions on his latest album is "Let Everything That Has Breathe Praise the Lord.** He was a pianist for the combined chorale of St. Stephens Baptist Church, where he was a member. He was a former musician for St. John C.M.E. Church and the Hallelujah Gospel Singers, organizer of the Voices of Winston-Salon Community Faith Choir, founder and president of Gospel Express Yourself Organization. He distributed robes through R.L. Couthen Robe Co. He was the featured announcer of the radio program, "God's Way is the Best Way." He was a retired employee of R J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., where he worked at the Whitaker Park and Tobaccoville plants. Couthen is survived by his loving wife, Gail Jenkins Couthen of the home; a son, Matthew Couthen of the home; two daughters, Pam (Ronnie) Howell of Winston-Salem and Rayponzia Couthen of Winston-Salem; five sons, Ray mond Lee Couthen Jr., Ronald Couthen, Steven Couthen, Curry Couthen, and Matthew Couthen, all of Winston Salem; nine grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Westley and Shirley (Johnny) Williams; two brothers? Sam (Jean) Couthen Jr. of Winston-Salem and Fred Couthen; one uncle, James Couthen of Winston-Salem; a devoted mother in-law, Mary Jenkins of Winston-Salem; four sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; plus many other relatives and friends. Services were held June 28 at St. Stephens Baptist Church, with the Rev. J.R. Samuels officiating. Burial followed in the family plot at Evergreen Ceme tery.
