HAWS Recognizes Youths for Their Achievements . Spccial to the Chronicle V More than 450 children who ?live in four city public-housing communities have been recognized for their achievements in a new after school program created to give these K-5th grade students a better chance of success in school, and life. All students who actively par ticipated in the Housing Authority of Winston-Salem's After School Program were recognized before an audience of relatives and friends.' ? teachers and community leaders. Students who performed well in school, who had perfect attendance and no conduct cuts became "HAWS Masterkids." During the school year the HAWS program provides a place for children from four public hous ing communities to gather immedi ately after school. In the spirit of the old African proverb. -It take a whole village to raise a child." HAWS created the program by bringing together parehts and other relatives, teachers, youth-oriented organizations, churches and other community resources. The program is sponsored by HAWS with a grant from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. After school the students first complete their homework assign ments and then take part in other activities. Enrichment activities from 5-8 p.m. on weekdays comple ment' the program, wi&i a different focus ^each day: cultural 'activities, drug intervention/personal improve ment, career day, game night/parental involvement night, and teen day/Scout day/ movie nieht. , . w j ... Community organization that have been involved this first year include: the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, ; the Salvation Army Boys' and Girls' Clubs. Scouts. Forsyth County Health Department. N-.C. Agricultural Extension Agency. Winston-Salem' Parks and Recreation and a number of churches. The recognition event and celebration was held in Ander son Center on Winston-Salem State ,:<r " - ' *: V. . ?' *','V ? . U ni versity ' s campus Saturday after noon (June 25), followed by a deception. Officials from city gov ernment, the school system, busi ness sponsors and supporting com munity organizations also attended. The students live in four public housing communities: Happy Hill Gardens. Piedmont Park, Kimberlv Park Terrace and Cleveland Avenue j Homes. * v " , FmHa Home Repair Loans Available I Paul W. Butler, Farmer Home Administration, supervisor for Forsyth and Stokes Counties announced that the agency has received substantial increase in its funding for loans tQ repair homes owned by very-low ineome individ uals" and families.' Funding in North Carolina for the FniHa 504 loan programhas moredhan tripled over last year's allocation. . Butlfcr said that $1.3 million dollars will be available to remove health and safety hazards. Individuals and families who own their home and l^ave household income below 50 percent of the county's median household income may qualify-. Loans can be made for amounts.up to $15.0(X) for Builders interested in contract ing for home repair jobs are needed. Butler said that "finding qualified builders to perform repair jobs is sometimes difficult/' Any builder desiring more. details about the Repair Loan Program should con tact the local FmHa office.
