Editor Sylvan Valley News:, Yes, Uncle John, that was fine corn and apples. Mrs. W. R. Davis is visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Lewis. There are .several cases of milk- sick reported in the mountains. R. Galloway, of Zephyr, Texas, is visiting at the Misses Galloway’s home. Augusta Morgan and sister, of Piedmont, S. C., are visiting Miss Nancy Morgan. Gaston Whitmire has returned from a month’s visit to his sister in Greenville, S. C. Mrs. L. W. Brooks and the charming little Erwin girls are vis iting at the Lewis home. Capt. M. R. Gleason and family spent several days last week in the Jackso|ncounty mountains. Baxter says Davis is crazy and Davis says that Baxter is crazy. Well, I shook hands with both. Tom Meece was called on to help at the East Fork Singing school. He declined and Love is filling his place. Mrs. Bessie McCarter, of Green ville, S. C., is visiting her father and mother Mr. and Mrs. John Whitmire. If you wish to see rocks and falls take your lady friend and drive over to Cold creek falls in Jackson county. They are 300 feet high. Say, boy, did you put that poi son (flour) in the spring? Someone said one of the girls cut the hair off of the end of your nose with a hoe. Capt. M. R. Gleason is convinced that if the president were really enjoying his summer., he .wo.ul^ have called somebody a liar by this time. Why can’t all little girls be like little Ella Zachary. She knows how to talk yet is not bold. She is pleasant company and only six years old. Duff Cantrell came over to Uncle John Whitmire’s to see some corn. After looking at John’s corn (not on his feet) he vows hereafter he will raise corn. The well known and estimable lady. Miss Mattie Galloway, died last Tuesday evening at her home. She was respected and loved by all who knew her and leaves a large cir cle of friends. Capt. M. R. Gleason, one day last week while over near Black Moun tain, met a mountaineer and asked him what his name was. “Josh ua” was the reply. “Are you the man who made the sun stand still,” asked the Captain. Quick as a flash came the answer, “No sir, I am the man that made the ‘Moon shine.” Miner, you hit the Railroad and the Federal Republican judiciary a shoulder blow and I will add a few words more to it. The Federal ju diciary is not so i^ermanent a body as many persons may suppose. In recent years the number of changes have been surprising. Since the beginning of 1902 Roosevelt has ap pointed 3 of the 9 members of the Supreme court, 12 of the 29 Circuit judges and 40 of the 90 District judges. In view of the fact that all these judgeships have a life tenure the number of appointments during the last 5 years is well nigh start ling. It indicates the possibilities that lie in the power of a two-term president bent upon carrying out certain interpretations of the con stitution and certain personal poli cies, and Judge Jeter C. Pritchard is a very effusive and fawning serv- ator of Roosevelt’s. Two days af ter United States Circuit Judge Pritchard issued his injunction re straining the North Carolina au thorities from enforcing the rate law against the Southern Railway his son was made surgeon to the Southern Railway.
