Club teaches "It's just something...," said Paul Chandley. "Something that gets in your blood," added John Hart. "Yeah, that's it," Chandley repeated. "It's just something that gets in your blood." If skydiving ever gets into your blood, the transfusion could have come from Chandley or Hart or any of the other members of the UNC Parachuting Club. So hooked are the roughly 40 members, Chandley sometimes even gets ridiculous. "Some folks argue that jumping is better than sex," he says. That attitude might explain why there are so many skydiving fanatics in the Chapel Hill area alone. "We've got at least 15 members with 60 jumps or more, and at least ten with twice that many," Hart said. Also, more' parachuters get started every day are on their way, as the club picks up and trains another eight to 10 new members every few weeks. IMs & CLUBS By CHIP KARNES "The club is the best way to get started," Hart said. "We have the lowest rates, plenty of equipment, and lots of good instruction." From Chapel Hill, it is but an hour's drive to the Franklin County Sport Parachute Center, the drop site. The Parachute Center is outfitted with planes, storage space and various safety provisions. The most important is Paul Fayard, the center's manager who doubles as the National Sport Parachute Association's area safety officer, and (often) adds to his personal total of 3,500 jumps. "Too many people think you just jump out of a plane and learn from there," Chandley said. "We stress safety and drill techniques for eight hours of land school here on campus before you even see a plane." The first jump is with a "static line," Terry Susan P. (r sky divers which limits the jumper's -total freefall time to seven tenths of a second. The next four jumps are with a static line and a dummy rip cord pull, Hart said, which simulates the real thing, although the main chute has already been triggered automatically. "If you can pull the cord several times in the air to get the feel, there's no reason you can't do it in free fall." J ust in case a jumper gets lonely, the instructor can also keep him or her company through a small two way radio strapped in near the skydiver's chest. "After 30 jumps, you lose a lot of learning restrictions and break away from what's called student status," Hart said. "That's when the jumper starts to stabilize and fly a little better, and gain more control in the air." Free fall times expand from five to 1 5 seconds and upward, while altitudes increase from 3,600 to 4,500 and more. This allows for "pins," or the starlike formations of several skydivers at once. "I always tell everybody," Hart said, "I'm scared of heights, but 1 love altitude." Altitude not only gives the jumper extra time for control, but also allows for a better landing. "My first jump was a tree landing," Chandley laughed "I could have relaxed in that underbrush all day." "1 might not land in the pit (a sawdust area for competitive spot landing) everytime," Hart said, "but I'm sure going to keep out of the trees and things like that." The UNC Parachuting Club has a rigid jump schedule. "If you hustle, you can make six or seven jumps in a day, and as many as 15 on a long weekend," Hart said. Interested students can catch more information on the Tar Heel skydivers by calling 942-8097. NOTES: Intramural swimming competition will be held at 6:30 tonight in the Bowman Gray indoor pool.
