PAGE FOURTEEN THE PILOT—Southern Pines, North Carolina THURSDAY. OCTOBER 13. 1955 FUNDS FOR WORK BEING RAISED HERE No. 1 Highway Association Ready To Launch Intensive Publicity Campaign The U. S. No. 1 Highway As sociation, Inc., is ready to launch an intensive advertising and pub licity campaign to attract tourist travel via No. 1 highway this sea son, according to an announce ment by Lester Rose of Raleigh, secretary-treasurer of the associa tion. The program includes printing and distribution of 150,000 strip maps. A new feature this season will be a new, elaborate Guide Book which will contain an article about each city and town along the Highway, including Southern Pines. The book will also contain a map, mileage data, and other information. As another part of the associa tion’s advertising program, adver tisements will be placed in the leading newspapers in Washing ton, P. C., Baltimore, Md., Phila delphia, Pa., New York, N. Y., Providence, R. I., Boston, Mciss., Rochester, N. Y., Cleveland, Ohio, Syracuse, N. Y., Pittsburg, Pa., Quebec, Canada, and' Montreal, Canada. Special newspaper stories writ ten by Mr. Rose will be sent to all of the newspapers who carry the advertising. A two-weeks promotion trip will be made in late November by Lester Rose to Northern cities to distribute U. S. No.l highway lit erature and to make direct con tacts with the automobile clubs, travel bureaus, and Chambers of Commerce. Liston Elkins, of Way- cross, Ga., President of the associ ation, will make a similar promo tion trip to Florida in February. During the past several months. according to Mr. Rose, consider able construction work has been done on No. 1 highway in Virgin ia, North Carolina, South Caro lina, and Georgia. Also, many new piotor courts and restaurants have been built along the highway to provide additional accommoda tions for tourists. Mrs. Oscar Holtzclaw is cur rently serving as the director for Southern Pines, and is in charge pf raising Southern Pines’ quota for the association. All business firms in Southern Pines are asked to contribute to the quota since all benefit either directly or indi rectly from the money tourists spend in Southern Pines. . A thorough check of all such equipment at least once a year is advised, so that it can be properly cleaned, repaired, and kept in fire-safe condition. Cameron will have no further interest therein and will not be liable or responsible for any indebtedness contracted by said business after this date. , A. A.
