Auguat 1. 1*4 Trees Can Lower Energy Costs Trees not only improve the appeiarance of your home and yard, they can also lower your summer energy bills. "Well-planned landscaping pays off," said Ted J. Chap pell Jr., manager of residen tial programs in Carolina Power k Light Co.'s conserva tion & load management department. "A properly shaded home can be as much as ten degrees cooler indoors than an unshaded home." "That reduces your cooling bill," he added. Sunlight can be blocked in summer by planting deciduous trees, which shed their leaves seasonally, along the west, southwest, east, and southeast sides of a home. These trees can save you energy in the winter too when their leaves are gone because then they allow sunlight to warm your home. Deciduous trees provide another cooling effect in sum mer. As hot air moves up through their branches, moisture is evaporated and the air is cooled. This creates light breezes that reduce the temperature around the house. Some large deciduous trees that grow well in this region are red maple, sugar maple, willow oak, and sweet gum. Small ones that grow well are dogwood, river birch, Japanese maple, flowering cherry, and bradford pear. Even grass and other ground covers can help cool houses in the summer if used to block heat and glare reflected from paved areas. Ground covers that grow well in this area are ivy, candytuft, wintercreeper, low-growing junipers, and ajuga. Homeowners must consider many factors if they decide to undertake a landscaping pro ject. "They must evaluate the ex isting landscape, space, shape of the house, soil, drainage, and utility lines in the area before deciding on trees or ground covers that would help reduce cooling and heating costs," Chapped said. "Also, it is important to remember that the best time to plant is early spring or ear ly fall," he said. "If homeowners want to plant now, it is best to use container grown plants." More specific information can be obtained from a nursery, local county agricultural extension service or landscape architect. A free landscaping booklet is also available at the local CP&L office.
