Boil, without stirring, until syrup reaches crack stage (310 degrees) on candy thermometer or until a teaspoonful dripped into cold water separates into hard brittle threads. Tip saucepan; dip apples in syrup, twirling to coat. Let any extra syrup on apples drain back into saucepan. Apply features for owl faces, using fumdrope and peppermint candjr, before syrup hardens com pletely; a little of the syrup can be used to- help stick on features. Note: While the syrup is eook ing, wipe inner sides of pan often with wet cheesecloth wrapped aro?nd a fork to remove any sugar crystals. The group was deployed from here in August lfU, to establish Edenton as an operational train ing base lor Second Marine Air craft Wing activities. All operational flying at Eden ton, including US Naval units, will cease when the auxiliary air sta tion closes Nov. 1. The air station is scheduled to be decommissioned Jan. 1. MAG-14 consists of four squad rone, Headquarters and Mainten ance Squadron-14, Marine Air Base Squadron-14, Marine Attack Squad ron-225, and Marine Attack Squad ron-211. Marine Air Traffic Con trol Unit -61 and MOREST (Mobile Arresting Gear) unit are also at tached to MAG-14. During its stay at NAAS Eden ton, MAG-14 transitioned from pro peller-driven Douglas AD "Sky raider" aircraft to the Douglas A4D-2 "Skyhawk" jet aircraft. Agent Announces Tobacco Survey A tobacco variety performance i survey is being conducted in the county to determine how various varieties compared in yield and value during 1958 on tobacco farms, announces R. M. Williams, county farm agent. As many farmers at possible are being contacted so that the infor mation gathered will represent a sizable portion of the tobacco grown in the county. Growers are t being asked what total yield and " value he received from each va riety he grew in 1958. Cards are being sent to a repre sentative group of growers. Grow ers who receive cards are urged to fill out the card accurately and return it to the county agent's of fice. Everyone who receives a card should send it in regardless of whether his yield is low, medium' or high. This is essential if the summary of the variety data is to represent the actual performance of a given variety in the county and state, Mr. Williams explained.
