7orld Events And The Bible In our last article, we took a look at married life and discussed some existing problems therein. This time we're going into detail and discuss specifically the roles of husband and wife. A common problem in many marriages involves a failure of one mate; or both mates, to accept and live up to his or her responsibilities. When one mate feels that the other one is thus negligent, friction-develops. What can be done about that? , i - -' Recall the couple in Florida mentioned in our last article. They had a problem of this sort. Their course highlights an important aspect of the Bible's advice. - - Jehovah, in establishing the marriage arrangement, outlined dignified roles for both husband and wife. In speaking of these as "roles," we do not mean "sexist roles" in which one sex is exalted and the .other is debased in position of duties. These Bible-designated roles honor both parties and make for success and happiness in marriage. ' The husband is assigned the responsibility of being the -loving head of the family, and the wife is to be a complement, a helpmate. Note this balanced advice: 'iWives, be subject-be submissive and adapt yourselves to your own husbands as a service to the Lord. For the husband is head of the wife as Christ is the Head of the church ... Husbands, love your wives, as Chirst loved the ,. . church and gave himself up for her ... He who loves his own wife loves himself. For no man ever hated his own flesh, but nourished and carefully protects and cherishes it." (Eph. '5:22-29, The Amplified New Testament.) r This headship betokens considerate leadership, not harsh dominance: Do you not know of marriages where the husband either is harsh and dominating or us unwilling to accept his responsibility to lead and protect? Would not those marriages be helped if the husband applied God's counsel, if he strove to provide loving, considerate headship for his wife? If you are a husband, do you think that this counsel may help you too, in fulfilling your role? If you are a wife, would you not respond favorably of your . husband was a loving head and applied this advice: You husbands should try to understand the wives you live with, honoring them as physically weaker yet equally heirs with you of the grace of life"? (1 Pet. 3:7, New Testament in Modern English.) This is now the wife in Florida responded when her husband took his responsibility as a loving family ' head seriously. She says: "I, in turn, did not resent my part." Note: "my part." What she meant was her responsibility to follow the Bibles' counsel to 'be submissive and adapt yourself to your husband,' looking to him for leadership and guidance. That may not be easy, especially if problems have already developed. But if you as a wife have such a problem and truly desire improvement in your marriage, applying Bible counsel mentioned above may be well worth the effort. Do not think that being a true helpmate is to be the husband's "helper," but He also described Himself as a "helper," only not as a "counterpart" of us humans. Surely that does not downgrade God, does it? Neither does being a helper downgrade you. Gen. 2:18; Hos. 13:19; Heb. 13:6. "I am willing to try, but my mate will not," some may feel. True, the greatest success comes when both mates follow God's counsel. Yet improvement is possible even if only one mater holds to the Bible. " For instance, a woman in Georgia admitted: "I wasn't happy with my marriage." Maybe both she and her husband were at fault, but she says that, for her part, she neglected her home duties.. "My house was always dirty, 1 apd my children weren't as clean as they should be." In August 1974 one of Jehovah's Witnesses met her. Soon in her home thev began a study of the Bible counsel on "Building a Happy Family Life." .The results were soon ; apparent, even though her husband did not share in the study. After only six months she wrote: "As I studied the ' Bible, things started happening. I was keeping house better, ; my children were cleaner. Little by little my marriage ; started to go right. Jehovah has blessed me since I've been s studying the Bible." As she came to fulfill her Bible v assigned role as a wife, her marriage improved. v If you need help with your marriage, whether it be trying to determine your "role in marriage," or some other we urge you to turn to the Bible. Jehovah's Witnesses in this area will be glad to help you. Take advantage of the opportunities you have to study with them. ; -(-Chapter 20 in the book The Truth That Leads to Eternal Life. The Norfolk & Carolina Telephone Ci Te!?rrph Co.: Sunday School Lesson , MADE IN HIS IMAGE (Genesis 1:26-27: 2:7. 18-25) Joseph Wood Krutch said, 'Tiie social sciences will never help us solve our problems as long as they continue to go on the assumption that whatever is true of a rat is true of a man. Indeed they will not be able to solve them so long as they assume that even a rat is adequately accounted for on the basis of mechanistic premises." Much has been spoken and even more written about man and mankind. But every man still wonders, "Who am I? Where did I come from? Where am I going?" A popular song of recent years began with these words: "Some say a man is made out of mud..." Well, this is almost what the Bible says about man's origin, but there is far more to the story than this. Man indeed was made from the dust of the earth, but we are not to forget that he also came . from the hand of God. Man is made in the image of God. These words form the key to man's identity. Key, Genesis 1 : 26-27 It was clearly the decision of God to make man. It was God's design to make man in His own image and after His own likeness. Whatever may be said of man, this must be kept in mind man is made in the image of God. This does not mean in the physical image because God is spirit. Man would be God's representative on the earth'. He would have dominion over all other creation. He would continue what God had begun. The next passage of Scripture deals with the kind of creation man was to be. Kind, Genesis 2:7 Verse 27 of Chapter 1 says that God created man in his own image. This verse tells us that the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Many have interpreted these last words "and man became a living soul" to mean that this made man different ' from the other creatures. This presents a. problem. The same word used here for soul is the one used of the fish, birds, and animals in 1:28, 30. Man is different from the other creatures not because he has the breath of life in him, but because he alone was made in God's image. It is the spirit in man that makes him the crown of God's creation. He can choose between good and evil. He can rebel againt, defy, and desecrate the will of his Creator. Man is one of a kind and stands alone in this respect. This is not to say that there is no kinship between man and the rest of God's creation. Kinship, Genesis 2:18-25 The fact that woman was taken from man would emphasize the kinship of all mankind. The narrative relates how the Lord God formed "every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air" out of the ground. To say that man has a relationship to the rest of God's creation is not at all to say that man came from them or that they came from man. It is to say that man is a creature of the dust. God made man. God gave man life. God gave man companionship. From this union other human beings would come into existence. Thus man has a relationship and a responsibility to all other creation and especially to every other person. Verse 25 says, "They were both naked, and were not ashamed." The sex act was not the sin of Genesis 3. There was and is no shame associated with sex except where and when sin pervefa God's plan and purpose. BIBLE QUESTION OF THE WEEK "Will the second coming of Jesus be in a physical body that we can see?" ANSWER Acts 1:11 says "This same Jesus shall so come in like manner..." The same Jesus , in His new spiritual body1 will return. His return will be visible, open and with great glory. ; Obituaries J.P.DAIL James Paul Dail, 44, of Rt. 1, Hertford, drowned Saturday afternoon while fishing in the Yeopim River.
