The church is Interested in se eming as many followers as pos sible without too much consider ation as to what it can expect from its candidates. Too often people join the church without a surrender to Christ, consequent ly^, we can expect only lip serv ice from such members. On the other, hand if we put a challenge to the candidates and they re spond to that challenge, these' members will do something to make the church better by their being a part of it. Christlianity is not a pastime. Most people think they can fold their hands and do absolutely nothing and be a saint of God. If you have any such Idle thoughts I wish here and now to inform you that you are not a child of God. Listen to the words of our text, "Elnter ye in at the etraight gate.” The way of evil is broad and wide and hat is the way the crowd is going. I. RELIGION MUST 'BE DYNAMIC Twentieth century Christianity has lost most of its power. There is no cross in it, no self-denial, no subjugating of the flesh, but ■we_ give free expression and use to the things of the flesh. The modern age thrives on drink, money, pleasure and sex. Over half of the advertising today uses the human body to catch the eye of readers The pathetic part is that people who call them selves Christians igloat over this type of advertising. The common notion is that all a Chi’istian has to do is to attend church once a week (provided he isn’t too tired on Sunday and doesn’t .have company! and live a quiet and decent life. This idea embraces no work and very lit- i tie support (financially). This is 'far from what Christ outlined ror his followers. Christianity must be dynamic in that it is or ganized as a fighting unit a- gainst the forces of evil. It is in deed tragic to let the public spend nearly eleven billion dol lars for alTOhol yearly without the church raising Its voice to oppose such a traffic. If. church members would give as much to the churcli as tliey spend for al cohol there would never be any trouble in raising the church budget. The church should ci-y out- against'call"-:snrial''evils'—<nfror- al and economic. II. CHRISTIANITY SHOULD PRO DUCE HEROES The eleventh chapter of He brew gives a picture of the he these heroes of faith and wish we could be ,one cf them. I can tell you that you can be just as great in the sight of God as these were. How?, by doing what you should for Christ. Christ said, “strive to enter the straight :ate’' if we want to be a part of the kingdom of God. Dm’t be tossed (or carried 1 away with every new religion. - III. JESUS WAS BOTH MEEK AND STERN How strange people are, they look only at the meek and gentle side of Christ. It is true He went about doing good —healing tin sick, giving the most violent of fense to all sorts of folks Ilii relatives, disciples, the Scribes and Pharisees Christ was so out spoken that He was excommuni Gated, stoncxl, hunted from place to place as though he was EN'E MY iNUMBER ONE.
