The Charlotte Jewish News - February 2015 - Page 23 Hebrew High Students Show They Care By Roz Cooper, Director CHS People are often amazed to hear that I still work with teens, and that I still love it. Everybody knows that teens today are ego- eentrie, soeial media obsessed, and have raging hormones that make it diffieult to reaeh their brains. Well, people who believe that should visit Hebrew High on any Wednesday night to see our students learning about their her itage, embraeing the needy in our eommunity, and earing about the Jewish people at home and in Is rael. One sueh evening, that put all of this in foeus for me, was our “Operation Sandwieh” night. “Operation Sandwieh” is a eom munity outreaeh program that helps Crisis Assistanee Ministries feed luneh to the needy in Char lotte. We partieipated as part of our 8th and 9th grade eore elasses’ Hunger and Homeless ness module. All students in 8th and 9th grade were asked to bring in the in gredients needed to make sandwiehes. Our goal was to make 800 sandwiehes, but hon estly, we had no idea how many people would donate ingredients and how many kids would attend. The final eount was (drum roll please) 900 delieious sandwiehes made with love and enthusiasm by our students and parent volun teers. There was no eomplaining, no eye rolls, and no wasted time. Everyone put their best foot for ward to help our hungry neigh bors. So thank you, to all of the parents who pur- ehased food for this great tzedakah projeet. Thanks to Rabbi Judy for setting the whole thing in motion. Thanks to the teens of Hebrew High for reminding me that I have the best job in the world (and for keeping me young). Hebrew High is still the plaee to be on Wednesday nights. Don’t let your student miss out on the fun and the learning. It’s not too late to enroll your 8th through 12th grade students today. Don’t let them miss out on the Hebrew High experienee. The LSJL is exeited to be part nering again with the Shalom Park Freedom Sehool for summer 2015. For the upeom- ing summer, an esti mated 80 seholars will be visiting the library eaeh week to partiei- pate in the summer reading program and to build up their per sonal library. Eaeh week the seholars will be given a new book to take home with them. These books will be theirs to keep. In order to make this program a sueeess we need the help of this eommunity so the library ean provide eaeh seholar with a book eaeh week for six weeks. To make this happen we need to eolleet approximately 500 books so eaeh ehild will have a eomplete summer library of books. In addition to every seholar re- eeiving six new books during their time at the Shalom Park Freedom Sehool, eaeh seholar’s parents will be invited to partieipate in the par ent night events that are seheduled while eamp is in session. During eaeh parent night event the library will be providing a seleetion of books speeifieally for adults. Based on the sueeess of last year’s parent night programs we are exeited to have these programs again. In order to make the events a sueeess the li brary needs to eolleet books that are benefi- eial to parents inelud ing: parenting books, self-help books, work books that parents ean use with their ehild, and other books for parents. Shalom Park Freedom Sehool seholars will be on the park in June and July, but preparations have already begun and books are already filtering into the library. Book donations ean be brought to the Levine-Sklut Judaie Library loeated on Shalom Park. For more information about the book drive please eontaet Nieole Lamparello by phone at 704-944-6763 or by email at nlamparello@shalom- eharlotte.org.
