As a reeent trans plant to Charlotte, she is still get ting used to our unusual traffie patterns. “I have yet to figure out how Rea Rd. runs parallel to Prov- idenee and then interseets it.” But she’s smiling, elearly pleased to be oeeupying the offiee of the Ex- eeutive Direetor at Temple Beth El. Laura, husband Howard, and daughter Sanya, moved to Char lotte in August of 2014, after 14 years of living in Des Moines, lA. “We needed a ehange, a new ad venture,” she explained. And the winters in Iowa were easy to forego. In Des Moines, both Laura and Howard were small business owners; he ran a retail wine shop. 4-to fm * Thank You Legacy Donors The following individuals/farnilies are in the Book of Life Society and have granted us pernnission to share with you that Temple Beth El has been included as a beneficiary of their legacy gift. But her experienee in training and personnel and her MBA and doetorate in Edueation aren’t the only things that makes her a good fit for the Exeeutive Direetor po sition. She also served as interim direetor of the Jewish Federation Community Sehool, where she eontributed to the ereation of a new presehool. This was in addi tion to her many volunteer posi tions in both the eommunity- at-large, as well as her synagogue. The strueture of Shalom Park is somewhat familiar to her, as Des Moines also has a single eampus for many of its Jewish organiza tions. The Caspe eampus houses the Federation, Jewish Family Serviees, Gan Shalom Presehool, Beit Sefer Shalom Community Religious Sehool, Engman Camp Shalom, the Jewish Community Relations Commission, and the Iowa Jewish Historieal Soeiety. While there are no synagogues on the eampus, Laura still said that working in eoneert with all the or ganizations on Shalom Park was one of the many things that at- traeted her to the position at Tem ple Beth El. As Exeeutive Direetor, Laura will be responsible for HR, oper ations, budget, building issues, engagement, and development through her relationships with the exeeutive eommittee, the building eommittee, and the finanee eom mittee, to name a few. “Just the way the elergy lift us up spiritu ally,” she says, “my goal is to lift our eongregation up toward our goal of relational Judaism, through the business side.” In spite of her eonfusion at our loeal traffie patterns, Laura and Howard do love their new home here. “The diverse population is one of my favorite things about Charlotte,” she asserts. “The eul- tural diversity is a great ehange for us. It’s just exeiting to have so many different kinds of restau rants.” In response to a look of eu- riosity, she replies, “Look, I know it’s not New York, but eompared to Des Moines, this is amazing.”^ TEMPLE BETH EL
