HE'S ON HIS WAYl 1982 Doff Box Derby Ten of Gaston County’s top tex tile executives participated in the first Doff Box Derby held outside in front of Firestone as part of Gaston County Textile Week. The vehicles were built from doff boxes set on 2x4 assemblies with standardized braking and steering systems. Firestone’s driver, “Rapid” Ron Noble raced in the first heat. He pulled out far in front only to over turn at the bottom of the hill. He regained his vehicle, however, and completed the heat with a substan tial lead. Winner of the Derby was Robert “Stick” Stowe of R.L. Stowe Mills. Ken “Basher” Botts of Stowe-Pharr Mills took the award for the longest run by going the farthest distance up a hill that began its in cline at the finish line. Winner of the best costume award was Dick “Hot Rod” Hunnicutt of Tultex Yarns who wore a Darth Vader mask, long black robe and a sword. On hand for the event were Hunter Huss cheerleaders and the Bessemer City Band. Firestone’s Exec-OCart, Model 1982, was built by A.D. McCarter and Thomas Turner. The cart was painted by Odess Killian with let tering done by Vera Cooper. We wish to thank the Maintenance Dept, for all its work in making Textile Week a success.
