The helicopter landed on the Brevard College athletic fields. Reportedly, it was sent to Brevard because of a local child going into cardiac arrest. White Squirrel Festival Meeting: Tuesday, April 8 in MG 113 Come help out with Derby over Memorial Day Weekend by Joseph Chilton Editor in Chief The members of Dr. Robert Cabin’s Agroecology class aren’t sure exactly which crops they will grow in the new 1,000 square foot campus garden, but they are sure of the positive impact that the venture will have on the campus. “This is great experiential education. We are implementing knowledge on a very small scale and getting into what it means to grow food,” class member Gathegu Gatungo said. The garden is located behind Myers Dining Hall across the street from the Alumni House, and will soon be open to all members of the campus community. The class planted various cover crops on Wednesday afternoon, including peas, oats, carrots, and vetch. These crops are intended to enrich the soil and are not to be eaten. They can be tilled up in order to plant other crops later Though the garden is small, the class is ecstatic to have it after cutting through large amounts of red tape in order to be allowed to have a garden to work with. “This has been a long, winding road. The Environmental Issues Committee really supported us, and a lot of other people were very supportive, but it took us a while to figure out how to get through some of the bureaucracy involved in setting this up,” said Cabin The garden is a starting point for what Professor Cabin hopes will be a valuable asset to the campus community. “This is a garden for the Brevard College campus community,” said Cabin. “Hopefully we will get some participation from students as well as from other members of the campus community such as faculty and staff” A Garden Club is also in the process of being formed, and will use the campus garden for it’s club activities. The club. which had an organizational meeting Wednesday afternoon, will be officially created in the fall, with Cabin serving as faculty advisor Cabin also noted that the plot of land where the garden is located provides room for expansion if more room is needed. Several professors from outside of the Division of Sciences have already expressed interest in using the garden as part of their curriculum. “This will be very nice for classes to go out and use for education, instead of sitting in class and looking at shdes or a textbook,” class member Megan Hutton said. photo by R.
