Reviews Melinda Clarke plays the notorious unstoppable girl-with-a-gun. The cast include Martin Sheen as Jason Wynn, D.B. Sweeney as Terry Fitzgerald, Theresa Randle as Wanda Blake, Nicol Williamson as Count Cogliostro, Todd McFarlane as Bum, Mindy Clarke as Jessica Priest, Miko Hughes as Zack, Michael Papajohn as Glen, Sydni Beaudoin as Cyan, John Leguizamo as The Clown, and Michael Jai White as Spawn. “Spawn” captivates the audience with it’s action-pack scenes and its thrilling comic book characters. The first issue of “Spawn,” the first African- American comic book heroes sold an unprecedented 1.7 million copies. The plot of the movie is easy to follow without a moment of dullness. The movie was directed by Mark AZ. Dippe. It was produced by Clint Goldman, Alan C. Blomquist, Todd McFarlane, Christopher Raimo, and Robert West. The screenplay by Alan B. McElroy and Todd McFarlane (comicbooks). “Davict Tulton- EVENT HORIZON For clarification, an event horizon is defined as the boundary beyond which matter and energy disappear or in layman’s terms, a blackhole. How does all this figure into the movie of the same title. The movie centers around a lost spaceship called the Event Horizon that shows up at the planet Neptune in the year 2046 after belong lost seven years. When the ship mysteriously reappears, an investigation team led by Captain Miller (Laurence Fishburne) is sent to look for survivors and fines out exactly what happened to the spaceship. When the crew finally enters the ship they find, to their dismay, that not only has the ship been abandoned but that various rooms inside the ship have been covered by blood and other unnameable bodily components. Seems like a good premise for a movie right? With a cast that also includes Sam Neill, Jack Noseworthy, and Kathleen Quinlan, the movie couldn’t possibly go wrong. Well, somehow the does. I’m not sure if its after the first demonic possession or after I learned that the ship was actually alive, but after a while the movie quickly disintegrates into a run of the mill cheesy B- movie. After a while I got the feeling that the movie should have been renamed to “Amytiville Horror 5: The Space Portal from Hell”. Although the movie contained eyepopping special effects and a decent cast, it still wasn’t scary. Many of the movie’s storylines just weren’t original. The movie’s producers were rehashing ideas already done previously in movies such as Poltergeist. Amvtiville Horror . and Hellraiser. You wanted a haunted house? Well you got it in the form of a spaceship. Another common and overused theme in the film is the sudden emergence of an ominous presence who is intent on claiming people to join it. Unfortunately, the movie also takes a cue from its predecesers, and offers a large variety of stupid characters. At the movie’s end, the only good thing I could take away from the picture was that I was lucky not to have spent my money to buy a ticket This is one movie I would definitely wait out until it got to cable. -Tiasheed Oluxva- SOUL FOOD When you think of Sunday dinner at your mom's, what comes to mind? Collard greens, macaroni and cheese, yams, fried chicken, roast beef, peach cobbler and sweet ice tea, hmmm! Some of these same dishes are served From Page 9 when Teri (Vanessa Williams), the eldest sister and the lawyer; Maxine (Vivica A. Fox), the middle sister and the stay at home mom; and Bird (Nia Long), the youngest sister and the cosmetologist; gather every week for the traditional Sunday dinner at their mom's Mother Joe's (Irma Hall) house. Her culinary flair is the glue that keeps her family together. But it is through the eyes of Mama Joe's grandson, Ahmad (Brandon Hammond), the son of Maxine and Kenny (Jeffrey Sams) that the Joseph's family story is told. Miles (Michael Beach), Kelly (Morgan Smith) and Lem (Mekhi Phifer) are other members of the family. Soul Food is about family values and traditions. Traditions that a mother or a father keep alive in a family. The Joseph's family's traditions seem to crumble when the family's matriarch goes to the hospital and the Sunday gatherings slop. You must see this movie to see what happens. Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds is the film's executives producer and his wife, Tracey, makes her debut as co-producer. The couple has partnered to form Edmonds Entertainment. George Tillman, wrote and directed the movie. It is based on personal childhood experiences.
