Favorite sport at Wesleyan—Bridge THE DECREE TUESDAY. NOVEMBER 24. 1964 Basketball Review Boosters Wind-Up Winning Season The Wesleyan soccer team closed its season with an away game against Pembroke State College. In the Bishops’ first encounter with Pembroke earlier in the season the outcome was a 0-0 tie even after two over time periods. The results of the second game were the same. The Bishops were unable to score even though they made manyfine attempts at the goal. The team decided to go for broke in th second overtime period by putting halfback Denny Seybert and fullback Fritz Smith, the co captains of the team, up on the line thus risking a loss due to the weakening of the defense. The gamble almost paid off. Se veral very close attempts wei made but they were still unab. to score. Thus the season ended wii 2-2-2 record. The Bishops bej St. Andrews 2-1 and 3-0; the lost to Campbell College 4- and U.N.C.’s freshmen 3-0; and they tied Pembroke twice. A very fine record for a first year team. The boys, under the able direction of Coach Music, worked hard and their efforts were rea lized in their record. Let’s look forward to next season. With the experience gained this year it should be a great one. These boys deserve a cheer for a winning season in a major sport. It feels good to win, let’s continue in our other sports and also continue to increase the sup- port for our teams. Congratulations! By Steve HaU I believe that congratulations- are in order for most students at Wesleyan College. I’m speaking of the school spirit that has been shown lately in our athletic pro gram. There was a large number students at all of the home soccer games and many traveled long ^stances to see our away games. ON THE HARDWOOD By: Curt Helgren The 1964-65 edition of the N. C. W. C. basketball team will open regular season play against Guilford College on December 3 at Greensboro, N.C. The Bishops will travel to Charlotte College December 5, for their first coa ference encounter, and on De cember 8, N.C.W.C. will host Methodist College in the new al most completed gymnasium. Coach Don Scalf has eight lettermen returning to bolster what appears to be a much im proved squad. Last year’s co captains, Mike Pratt and Lloyd Nelson head this array which also includes backcourt performers A1 Rexroad, Ray Freeman, and Denny Seybert, along with fore court operatives Clem Josselyn, Tom Davis and Curt Helgren. Four newcommers are also ex pected to increase Wesleyan’s chances for a winning season. Dave Brady, a six foot six Inch center will be counted upon to give much needed board strength, as will six foot, five inch fresh man George Watson. Freshman Wayne Brown and Brian Rich ardson have given evidence that they, too, will play an impor tant role in the team’s quest for a winning season. Practice sessions (amlstwork men, thesbians, and spectators) have remained highly spirited thus far, and give no indications of slowing down. Ambiguous as the phrase “team spirit" maybe, it can be used to describe the You’ll Fall In Love, Too • • • with a Student Checking Account that helps you manage an allowance, budget expense. Last year’s team was often criticized by the student body for lacking team unity, and certain members were criticized for playing “only for themselves” and not for the benefit of the team. On the as sumption that these criticisms were^valld this ieam Is well on its way toward correcting the lack of unity, and as for the other cirticism it is one that can only be answered by this season’s per formances of the people in ques tion. Apparently Coach Scalf has not yet decided upon a set starting five, and with more depth than last year’s squad could afford, everyone on the team will prob ably be seeing plenty of action. Coach Scalf has inserted a new and varied offense In which he hopes to take advantage of the offensive skills ofall his players. He has stressed defensive play in an effort to correct one of last year’s glaring weaknesses, and he has put his team through no small amount of conditioning drills in order to increase its running ability. The Bishops will not only be gunning for a winning season, but for a shot at the conference crown. The team realizes that this will be am unbelieveable leap from last season’s poor record, but they have their hopes, and they are ready to give an all out effort in order to succeed.
