(FditoriaCs liifed/ Booh!ftore4f' 12 May 2003 Classes to prepare, papers to grade. Students to animate, Michael Jackson specials to ignore, a dreary wet winter to endure, teases of spring to savor, war to abominate. With so much to worry about, we might be forgiven if we look for diversion. But most movies are meaningless, television is a pounding nationalistic drum roll for war, and music is only sporadically interesting. So I rummage through used bookstores. I remember my first used bookstore. When I was in college, I stumbled into a dark musty shop stuck between a hippie used clothing store and a Laundromat. I went in because I saw a book I was familiar with but in an unfamiliar edition. I can still fell the heavy air, smell the incense, and hear the rock music. I wandered in just to look, but when I left I possessed a beautiful edition of Hermann Hesse’s Siddhartha (a favorite book in those years), a couple of books on Buddhism, and two new' friends. Fred and Ed (I’m not kidding) ran this store. They were thirty something, long-haired, beard wearing, sandal footed, John-Lennon- glassed genuine freaks. They looked as if they had trucked out of a Zap comic book (find some of those in a used bookstore). Many a wiseacre college student must have thought that these tw'o hippies would be an easy mark. But Fred and Ed knew books - and customers. If you didn’t want to buy a book, you avoided their store. Fred and Ed believed in the power of books to change lives, and they had an uncanny ability to size up a customer, dig around in one of the piles of often stained but readable books, and pull out a jewel that you just had to read. A friend of mine still talks about the day she went in, met Fred and Ed, talked for maybe five minutes, listened for ten, bought a book on a V i Dr. Steve ; Muses Greek mathematician, and took her first step toward becoming a math historian. She teaches at a Virginia University and still has the book. Another time I took a neighbor of mine to Fred and Ed’s because he needed some extra cash more than he needed some of his books. I went with him because he said he needed to leave with cash, not with other books. I was supposed to help. That morning Fred and Ed were just opening, so we thought this would be a good time to move in and out. They looked at my friend’s books- mostly Latin American poetry - and offered him a lump sum. He accepted, but then they went around him and told me that a book they just knew I wanted had come in. And by the way, had we read this by this Peruvian poet; a famous professor had just brought it in. They had us both. We bought. Fred and Ed treated each book in the store with respect both because each book has a story. We know you’ll like this book; listen to this passage. This guy’s a genius; this is the only English translation in town. If you like that, wait until you read this. Take care of this book; you’ll want to give it to your children. Since I graduated and moved away, I have always sought out used bookstores everywhere I have lived and visited. I often find knowledgeable people who love books. For years, I would periodically visit Fred and Ed as well; but they sold the store in the early 1990s, and Fred died last month. Even the store is gone now. But I still read some of their books, and when I need respite from the commonplace or from the horror of everyday life, I still seek out the people and the books of small used bookstores.
