MARCH ISSUE SEW IT SEAMS Page Nine $> / WATCH THOSE FINGERS — Sewed fingers is an acci dent which figures prominently in almost every safety report and is an accident which demands constant work to avoid. W'ith the hundreds of machines in Anvil Brand’s plants, it naturally follows that the possibility of these accidents will be with us always. What can an operator do to make sure she is taking every possible precaution against such an accident? Ossie Wright, safety director, urges operators to learn the proper use of hands for the particular operation involved, as well as placing the work correctly on the machine. Thelma Smith, above, was snapped by the photographer as she was at her machine in Utility Department. Thelma has been with Anvil Brand six years. She lives at 125 West Willis. Safety Committee Meets The current Safety Committee f met last week at Sherrod Con ference room when the group de cided to have banners calling at tention to the need to be careful in walking up and down stairs, placed on the stairways. Ossie Wright noted three falls reported last month, none of which were serious, but which potentially could have been. A fall is the most dreaded ac cident in an industrial plant, or any other place for that matter, as the body’s correct functioning can be completely upset by what may appear to be a minor fall. The necessity of always walk ing, not running, up as well as down stairs, was re-emphasized by Ossie. Ossie, in a brief talk to the committee quoted from an ad dress by Governor of North Car olina Luther H. Hodges who stated: “There are many worth while organizations in North Car olina which are dedicated to many outstanding and commend able objectives. However, I know of few organizations which are dedicated to a more worthwhile objective than safety. Accident prevention is such a basic neces sity in our life today that we must never take it for granted or assume that somebody else will do (the job. . . It will take the continued effort of all concerned to prevent industrial accidents, save need less pain and injury, reduce lost earnings of employees and em ployer, save the needless suffer- ring which so Often follows thes- accidents.” Departments receiving grades of 100 percent this month includ ed: Cutting, Pattern, Hudson Of fice, Warehouse, Sewing, White Office, Engineering, Sales, Pants II, Overall, Dungaree, Cutting, Pattern,, Maintenance, Hudson No. 3; Stock Hudson No. 1. NEW PLAID SHIRT — Clarence Duggins of White Di vision models one of the most popular numbers in men’s sport shirts. The authentic Scotch plaid comes in predom inating colors of red, green, brown and gray. The shirt features a spread collar with convertible neckline and two pockets. This number is one of several garments made of Cone materials which are being sent to New York City for display at the Cone offices there. “Split Personality” Some people talk about “a worker” ... “a consumer” . . . “an owner” as if they were three different people. As a matter of fact, there’s no such division in America. Almost every one of us is a worker, a consumer, and an owner all within a 24 hour day. It’s like a sort of split personal ity that we assume at times dur ing each day. When we finish our workday, we may stop on the way home to shop . . . that’s when we are consumers. Or we may make a deposit in a bank, or a payment on a home . . . and that’s when we’re an owner, for the bank in vests that money in business for us so that we may get interest on our money. Under the wonderful and dem ocratic system which has made our country so strong, there is no i> such thing as a division of inter est. We are all workers ... all consumers . . . and all owners. To keep America strong and healthy, we’ve got to think of all three as one. That’s the way it really is, and that’s the way we want it. It’s all said for us in a familiar slogan . . . “United we stand . . . divided we fall.” Profanity is but the effort of a feeble mind to express itself forci bly. A humorist is a man who even when feeling bad, feels good about it. Marriage is somestimes like cream — doesn’t take much to turn it sour.
