Cultural Connection April 17, 1992 Page 7 Local band rocks Lighthouse Rob Whiteside The" Pendulum It was a little more than a week ago that I had my first Lighthouse experience. I was drawn there not by the promise of the best beer in town nor with expcciations of a great atmosphere. No, it was the four-man band from Chapel Hill known as Dillon Fence that sparked my interest in the tavern. I am told that the place had never seen quite as much action as it did on April 8th. It was another Chapel Hill band, Queen Sarah Saturday, that opened up shortly after 10 p.m., and they were very well received. However, when they left the stage, things started to tighten up around the small performance area. It wasn't until midnight that Greg Humphreys, Kent Alphin, Chris Goode, and Scott Carle took the stage and things got kinda crazy. Immediately the crowd started swaying to the music. Swaying quickly turned into slamming as the rookies in the crowd pulled back to the walls and a pit opened up in the middle of the room. The guys played for an hour and a half, doing songs from their first album, that they independently produced, focusing on songs from the recently released Rosemary. 1 must admit that the show was much more than 1 could have expected from a band that would be willing to play at Elon. The crowd was there in great numbers to show support for larger bands in this one bar town. In short, it reminded me of one big high school party. You knew everyone Briefs Carmina Burana to be performed Jennifer Hudson The Pendulum The concert piece Carmina Burana, by Carl Orff will be presented by Elon’s Choral Music Department on Saturday, April 18 at 8 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre. Jonathan Green, director of Choral Activities, is the conductor of the piece. Green says he feels confident that the 153 performers will be the largest number ever to perform on stage. Even though the pieces will be sung in either Latin or Old German, Green believes most people will understand the content and recognize certain pieces. "It has a lot of variety, and most everyone will recognize the tunc at the Bassist Chris Goode is on stage with vocalist there, people were crammed in like sardines, and they were having ,a good time. People were loud and the music was louder. The room was hot, smoky, and sticky but the show was great. If you were there, you know that the performance was well worth the hype. Not since the Connells has a progressive band sparked such an interest across Elon College. Dillon Fence has a raw and real sound that will be selling big once the masses get wind of it Right now, Dillon Fence is on Mammoth records, an independent label Rob Whiteside/ The Pendulum Greg Humphreys. out of Carrboro. Kristin Meyer, the new station manager at WSOE, is an intern with Mammoth. Meyer called Dillon Fence, "the best thing coming out of the area right now" She also thinks that they can really make it big if they get picked up by one of the major record labels. If you missed the show, pick up the album, Rosemary. You won't be disappointed. Also, Dillon Fence will be opening up for the Connells at the Walnut Creek Amphitheater on Saturday, April 25. Give me a call if you want to go. After that show, I'm hooked on the "Fence!" opening. U's been used in several movies," Green said. According to Green, the story revolves around the baritone's attempts to court the soprano, who resists until he succeeds with the help of the chorus. The concert will be performed by Elon College Choirs, Festival Orchestra, Carolina Children Chorale, and guests soloists Carla LeFevre-Milholin (soprano), Jeffrey Price (tenor), and Donald Milholin (baritone).
