THE GRYPHON — Page Eleven '“la RENEE HOLCOMB shows off her forehand. 10-4 Record Girl’s Tennis Has Successful Season The RMSH girl’s tennis team finished its regular season of play with a successful overall record of 10-4. This year has been very outstanding even though the team suffered a few unexpected losses. Coach Judy Bradshaw was pleased with the team’s season. Rocky Mount beat teams from Goldsboro, Kinston, Greenville, Charles B. Aycock, New Hanover, and New Bern. However, the coach was disappointed with the defeats that they received. Miss Bradshaw said that the major differences between the 1974 team and RMSH’s previous tennis teams was that the girls this year had more enthusiasm and experience. Their togetherness and team spirit added greatly to their victories. Miss Bradshaw said that the team played many exciting matches. The three most nerve- racking were against New Hanover (there), where RMSH won 5-4, Goldsboro (here), where the team lost 4-5, and New Bern (there), where RMSH won 5-4. Some of the outstanding players were Helen Williams, Julie Ward, and Joy Bradley. Williams held a 10-4 singles record for the year. Most of her defeats were against the number one players of the opposing teams. Ward held an impressive singles record of 12 wins and two losses. She showed a big improvement oyer her firct year on the team. Bradley had an outstanding season in doubles competition. Her record for the season was 13-1. Cross-Country Ends Season The Rocky Mount Cross Country Team finished its season with a record of three wins, four loses and two place finishes. The Gryph finished fifth in the division race; even though, the Gryphs were out- manned in every race, many times 2 to 1. In the Gryphs first tri-meet with Wilson, the team placed third behind Northern Nash with 32 points and the first placed Titans with 23 points. The next tri-meet was a complete turn around, with the Gryphs placing first ahead of Greenville and Northern Nash wiSfi 43 and 41 points respec tively. Lee Toler and William Gray placing high for the Gryphs. The next tri-meet had North ern Nash, South Edgecombe, and the Gryphs running a very fast paced race. Mike Avent and William Gray placed high for the second place Gryphs. RMSH placed fourth in the next meet which was at home. There were 42 runners from five schools, of which only five were Gryphs with all the Gryphs placing in the race. r The Gryphs finished the season with a hard fought victory, over Greenville and Ahoskie. It was a very close race with RM having 40 points against Greenville’s 41 and Ahoskies 43. William placed third for the Gryphs. Even though the Gryphs were outmanned every race they put forth a great effort. 1 :: Rocky Mount Opticians 151 S. E. With everyone clamouring for women’s rights in athletics, it seems only logical for the guys to demand participation in cheerleading. Raleigh Broughton has male cheerleaders, as do most of the major colleges. Being a cheerleader would have its advantages — such as riding on the bus with the girl cheerleaders, and getting into games free. Think about it. The sectionals were held in Wilson on October 16 and 17. Renee Holcomb, Helen Williams, Teresa Joyner, and Joy Bradley represented RMSH. Holcomb and Joyner were each defeated during their second round in singles. Williams and Bradley who teamed up to play doubles, were defeated during their third round of competition. Even though the girl’s tennis team had a very successful season the girls felt that they received very little support. The girls practiced hard and neglected many things in order to play tennis. They deserved the school’s recognition, yet did not receive it. Hopefully next year everyone will lend the tennis team their support. A. C. C. Note: Well, at least Wake Forest is consistant. The World Series has come and gone, and it seemingly passed unnoticed by most RMSH students. Baseball was once called “The National Pastime” but not at Senior High. To prove the apathy of many students toward the World Series, I asked several people to define “Rollie Fingers.” The answers were varied and somewhat amusing. Examples; The guy who discovered North Carolina. A stick-shift for foreign cars. A creme-filled doughnut. A massage parlor. If the truth is to be known, Rollie Fingers is a star relief pitcher for the World Champion Oakland A.’s. He was the World Series Most Valuable Player. It just goes to show that you can fool too many of the people too much of the time. It’s a newer Navy than you think. Now you can join up for as little as 4 months of active duty. In the Navy’s “4x10" reserve program, you enlist for as little as 4 to 10 months of active duty for training, depending on the apprenticeship training you select. After that, you may take ad vantage of this training to pursue a similar civil ian career of your choice. Your obligation to the Navy after this training is a drill session one evening a week or one weekend a month, and two weeks of training duty every summer during the remainder of your 6-year reserve enlistment period. Do you have what it takes? If you think you do, ask your local recruiter for more details about the fastest Navy career on record, the Navy 4x10 reserve program. U. S.
