pa^e three Maich 17.1993 CampUS EdttOrial Student outraged by Meredith advertisement Lisa White Robinscn • History major, Sc^homore What happens when you say to someone, “I go to Meredith College”? I can tell you the typical reactions 1 get: “Oh.” “Is tiiat a two-year or four-year school?” “Don’t you have to be in by 10:00 p.m. or something?” “Why in the This Mcr«ditb>sp«isored advertisement appeared in several area high school newspapers. world would you want to go to a sdiool with all girls?” You can see why I’m getting pretty tired of defending my “Alma Mater. ” Our reputation in die state is completely skewed, lliis brings me to an essential question that almost every student gripes about, but never tries to solve. How can we better our image in the state and nation? Well, advertising for mediocre students in ahigh school newspaper is not the way K) achieve one. Meredith College recently ran an advertisement inApexHigh'sschool newspaper, whichisreprinted below. The ad appealed to C-average students with low SAT scores. This gives high school students the impression that “Hey, if I can’t get in Carolina, I always have Meredith to fall back on.” TTius, we’ve basically reached the point where enrollment is dropping so quickly, Meredith will accept almost anyone who has money to pay. However, the reason enrollment has continued W slump is because ourresidence policies are prehistoric. Students are babied by hall social programs, no male vi^tadoo policy and orientation overkill. Personally, I would like to see Meredith become ttie Smith or Radcliffe of the South. We could achieve a standard in which high school women say, “Gee, I’m so nervous about getting into Meredith.” There are ways to achieve higher standards. First. Meredith should make the requirements for admission much more difficult We can do this by increasing the SAT, GPA and school activities requirements. After all, when you advertise for mediocre students, you get mediocre students. Second, Oie college needs to bring the living policies to the twentieth century. We can do ttiis by setting aside some “women only” dorms, and others with a male visitation policy. This will give prospective students a dioice, which will eventually attract more students. Thi^ in advertising Meredith should appeal to Ihe independent, liberated women. As of now, the typical image of Meredith “Angels” is sa|^y littie “Daddy’s girls” who go home every weekend to be with the boyfriend they’ll marry after graduation. One way we can eliminate this stereotype is to establi^ a progressive women’s organi zation on campus, and boycott bumper stickers that say, “Meredith girls are die best in the world.” I want to throw up every time I see one. The whole purpose of a women’s college is to aeate indq)endent, female thinkers. It is not aplace to esc^ from reality or get a MRS. degree. Ten years from now you could be seeking that all-important job, and your employer asks about college. When you say “Meredifli College” do you want him/her to frown or smile? It’s your decision.
