At Meredith, however, cans are hoarded for months, all in preparation for one of the most creative things you can do with a can: Can Art. As 4 p.m. approached on Thursday afternoon, Nov. 2, the four energized classes at Meredith College were divided into their appropriate sections of the courtyard. As the week of Cornhuskin’ neared the climatic end, one of the main events that would determine the final ranking of the classes was about to take place. Surrounded by trash bags of colored cans and enthusiastic fans, the classes discussed their final designs and strategies. A few minutes before the chapel bell chimed, the classes met at the fountain (o discuss rules and regulations with Meredith Recreation Associa tion Cornhuskin’ co-chairs Ashley Wilson and Mary Shul- tea. Each class then went back to their starting positions to prepare for the start of Can Art. A siren started the classes in a frenzy, and for 30 minutes, each class threw cans around and tried to put together their design under the direction of coaches on the third floor of each dorm. In front of Stringfield, the freshmen class gathered to carry out their theme of Take 1. Their design was a star with an angel in the middle. “Even without experience, our Can Art looked good!” exclaimed Jacquelyn Helms. ’04. The juniors were settled in front of Vann putting together a bull’s eye in Round 3. Jordan West, ‘02. said "We really hit 'the target on this year’s Can Art!” A high-heeled shoe quickly formed in front of Faircloth where the sophomores were taking 20 Steps Out. The seniors, on their Mis sion Impossible; 2001, laid out a bomb in front of Brewer to show their spirit. Exploding out of the bomb were represen tations from their past themes: The New Kids on the Block, one from the third floor of each dorm. As the cans were cleared, each class wondered how their art had measured up. Each year, the cans are recycled and the money is donated to Make- the Spirit of Cornhuskin', and G.I. JuniOTS. Senior Jennifer Phillips, who co-chaired the seniors’ Can Art with Kaley Redmond, said, ‘T’m glad we could incorporate all of our themes.” The senior class had been drinking Harris Teeter brand Dr. Smooth to get black cans for its design. Phillips was pleased with the way the class will- i n g I y drank so many soft drinks. She was also pleased to see the numberse- niors who came out Thursday afternoon to help with making the design. Other classes felt the same way. Some Can Art designs came together morequickly than oth ers. Some classes looked pleased while others struggled to make som^hing happen up until the last minute, but it all came together when time was called Cheers echoed through the quad as each class looked at their designs with pride.
