Jim Cairey is brilliant in this role that is more serious than his usual characters. Released to DVD last month, this is a film that is definitely worth a look. After Joel Banish's (Car rey) relationship with his firee-spirited girlfriend Cle mentine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet) ends, he finds that she has undergone a proce dure to remove all memories of him. In a rage of anger, Joel contacts the doctor and developer of the technol ogy, Dr. Howard Mierzwaik (Tom Wilkinson) and makes an appointment to have his own memories of Clemen tine erased. While the pro cedure is being carried out, Joel decides he wants to keep his memories of Clementine and he resists the procedure while Dr. Mierzwaik and his workers (Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood and Mark Ruf- falo) fight to complete the task. Joel struggles to out smart the process and to Editorial: George Bush BBA MOOD mind “A SMART, SEXY AND SERIOUSLY FUNNY COMEDY! OVER 50 FOUR-STAR RAVE REVIEWS! keep at least one memory of Clementine. In the end, it is the very thing that makes the couple forget each other that brings them closer together. The first half hour is some what slow, leaving the view er with an array of questions and confusions but towards the middle, the plot picks up quite a bit. There is a slight element of suspense as memories of their times together are being erased one by one and Joel resists each time, and is desperate photo courtesy of amazon.com to stash them in other parts of his brain. It is a film that provokes viewer’s thoughts; would it be easier to simply erase memories that make us sad or should we find the purpose of those memories? Eternal Sunshine will first make you wish you could erase your own memories of past loves, but as you follow Joel on his jour ney to realization of the importance of memories, you too will find your own. AMBER KRAWCZYK Contributing Writer Foreign policy includes many aspects of govemment, from the global economy, to promoting better healthcare, to encouraging democracy and ft^edom in the world, it en compasses much of the most debated issues of today. Presi dent Bush has many plans for addressing current problems with foreign policy and meet ing urgent needs in the world. The President values the American rights of fi-eedom, justice, and equality for all people. He believes in pro moting these same rights in other countries by instituting the Millenium Challenge Ac count, which will encourage nations that show they value the American dreams by aid ing them financially. The Pres ident will increase its fimding by 50 percent. The President also believes in the healthcare of all people, in all nations. President Bush has imple mented several plans to aid in healthcare of many nations, such as Afiica. President Bush’s Emergency Plan for AIDS relief will continue to have its $15 billion over the next five years in order to treat all of those affected by the dis ease. As well, the President’s G-8 Famine Initiative, Water for the Poor Initiative, and other intemational efforts, will continue to receive funding to end hunger, provide clean drinking water, and promote better education for people in some of the world’s poor est nations. He also will con tinue his fight against diseases such as malaria and tubercu losis in these countries. The President will meet the econ omy’s urgent needs as well. The President will continue to support a trade agenda that will not only support Ameri can workers, but that will benefit other countries in need of economic help, as well. George Bush will benefit all parties involved in the World Trade Organization’s Doha Development Agenda while following his own trade agen da for the country. He will also continue to successfully implement the reforms in In temational Financial Institu tions involving more grants rather than loans to over come debt that so many face. Promoting democracy and freedom for all countries is also on the top of the Presi dent’s list of foreign policies. He believes that all countries, and their citizens, should en joy the fi'eedoms that we, as Americans, fought for in the American Revolution. The President has proposed to increase the funding for the National Endowment for De mocracy to $80 billion to pro mote these ideals of tolerance and freedom. The Broader Middle East and North Af rica Initiative are two mea sures the President has tak en to promote democracy. The most debated about component ^ of President Bush’s foreign policy is that of the war in Iraq. President implemented his campaign against terror in the world af ter the events that took place on September llth. While everyone in the U.S. remem bers this sad hour, they also remember that the President immediately took action to combat not only the causes for the actions that took place but also to prevent further ac tions like these by any terrorist groups. The President took a preemptive strike against Iraq and Saddam Hussein, who repeatedly refused to com ply with many of the U.K.’s sanctions. The President saw the threat and pm^ued it. This action was another stride to wards the completion of his goal to end terror in the world and promote freedom and de mocracy. While the war has proved to be tough, the Presi dent strongly believes that the actions taken were necessary and will be fruitful if the right path is followed in the future. The President has imple mented several new strate gies and programs in the last four years of his term. He be lieves that, given the chance to complete his goals, the nation will be a safer place in the future. George Bush has decided firmly what he stands for, and will continue to prove that he is strong and able to complete his duties as President of the United States.
