CAMPUS FEATURES September 28,2§§5 Tickling the Ivories Tibetan Art and Culture TERRI RICHARDS Staff Photographer James Fogle, Professor of Music at Meredith, present ed an exciting piano recital on the evening of September 19,2005 in Carswell Concert Hall. Without the fanfare of a large public performance. Professor Fogle casually walked onto the stage, sat down and began to play Three Preludes for Piano, a piece by Gershwin. It flowed from his fingers like a work that was being composed in the moment rather than one that had been practiced. In fact, if you had not been paying attention, it would have been easy to miss the transition between each of the three pieces that made up the work. As the concert continued the theme became better de fined. Each piece provided a stepping-stone into the age of Jazz. With the progres sion came changes in Pro fessor Fogle’s playing style. Some of the works were heavy in tone.and it would appear that he was climbing into the keyboard and forc ing the notes out of the pia no. While in others that were Photo by; Terri Richards Dr. Fogle playing at his piano. lighter in qtiality Professor Fogle made it seem as if his fingers were tickling the keys as they skipped past. One of the lighter pieces, and my fa vorite, was “Dizzy Fingers” by Zez Confrey. This partic ular song moved so quickly that the audience could not help but laugh in the end. The most awkward selec tion of the performance was a composition by Aaron Cope land called Piano Variations. If you were unfamiliar with the dissonant chords that fill jazz compositions this piece would have soimded like a non- piano playing eight year old pounding out his first composition. In some places the dissonance was so grating that it simply made you want to cringe. But Professor Fogle moved the work along in such a way that comments of “wow” could be heard from those in attendance. In addition to his exception al playing, Professor Fogle interjected commentary that helped to inform the many viewers about the works he played. His quiet but, confi dent demeanor help to create the relaxed atmosphere that you might have found in a tiny back alley bistro of the early twentieth century.
