Page -6- mistreated stray who came to the ice house and himg around so long Bill got attached to her and brought her home. She now has a great life. When we opened the door we were met by B.J. who flung himself at us jumping, licking, sliding and kissing us. He's a soft ball of buff colored fur. He's a Peke-a-Poo and I fell in love — and with Crip too. Besides being dog lovers, Bill and Betty enjoy walking the beach, she likes bridge and reading, he likes working in the yard and he also has a great interest in studying the stock market. They both enjoy their new beautiful home and just looking at the sound. They are happy here. Bill and Betty are a very special addition to our town. I hope you will meet them and hear more of the interesting life they've had right here in this area. Oh yes, I couldn't end without saying Bill is really special since he's a graduate of Vanderbilt University, and many of you know thats in Nashville, Tennessee, my old JACQUE LYNN oOo --------- The Wildlife Shelter proposed by Stephanie Goetzinger is now a reality operating outside the Aquarium. She will be-providing Shore Line with a new feature "PATIENT OF THE MONTH". Here is our first:- Outer Banks Wildlife Shelter [O.W.L.S.] "Patient of the Month": Common Loon Case #7015. This bird was rescued from the Iron Steamer Pier after having been caught in a gill net. Examination showed a deep laceration on the back which required stitches, and a paralyzed right leg. Since loons' legs are set so far back on their bodies, they are incapable of standing or walking, and spend their whole lives either on the water or in the air. It is therefore possible to release a loon with only one good leg. The wound was cleaned and sutured,* and the bird kept resting on a foam cushion^^ In typical loon fashion, she began to gulp down about 4 to 5 pounds of fish a day! Many thanks to the folks who set minnow traps and emptied their freezers to keep this hungry bird going. The wound healed nicely, and after the stitches were removed, our loon swam in a kiddie swimming pool and attacked any fish thrown in the pool. After two weeks of care, the loon was released in the sound...but could she dive well enough to survive?? She dove - we held our breaths, too! - and resurfaced 100 yards away with a big fish in her mouth. A successful release. JANUARY: Owls begin nesting Doves begin courtship flights YOU CAN: Cap chimneys before nesting season begins [they look like hollow trees!] Provide suet and seed for our winter residents. O.W.L.S. NEEDS SMALL FISH AND "EGG CARTON" TYPE FOAM PADS. This is a non-profit organization which provides the means of attracting various artists that could not be afforded by a small community. Some famous artists who participate in the plan include the New York City Opera Quartet, the San Francisco Opera Singers, a group call "Big Band Classics", Canadian Brass and the Dukes of Dixie Land; just to name a few. This plan can be likened to that of "Friends of the College" in Raleigh, but on a much smaller level.
