Robert McDuffie, Violinist Photo by Peter Schaaf Cart Artist To Appear In Vanceboro The Craven Community Arts Council announces CART Week, featuring violinist Robert McDuffie, who will meet and perform for residents of Craven County in a variety of settings May 13-18. McDuffie will be in Vanceboro at the Episcopal Parish Hall on Sunday, May 16 at 2:30 p.m. The informal performance here is sponsored by the Rotary Club and the Junior Women’s Club. CART—Community Artist Residency Training - is a project aimed at bolstering community support for the arts. The CART operation in Craven County is partially underwritten by the Lyndhurst Foundation. Matching monies have been raised locally through fund-raising projects. CART is a division of Affiliate Artists, Inc., a national nonprofit organization established in 1966 to provide career opportunities for America’s finest professional performers. Since then. Affiliate Artists has sucessfully brought hundreds of artists and communities together throughout the United States. Robert McDuffie, a native of Georgia, is a recent graduate of The Juillard School, where he studies with Dorothy Delay. He served as Artist-in- Residence with the Lincoln Center Student Program. McDuffie has also appeared as featured soloist with symphony orchestras across the country, including the Baltimore Symphony, the St. Louis Symphony, the Stamford Symphony , the West Virginia Orchestra, and the Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra. In addition, he has performed with symphony orchestras in Greece, Brazil, Puerto Rico, and the Soviet Union. McDuffie, who has relatives in eastern North Carolina, has spent many boyhood summers in our state. He says of his approaching visit to Craven county, “It will be like coming home again.’’ There will be a final public performance at Centenary United Methodist Church in New Bern on Tuesday, May 18, at 8:00 p.m. Tickets will be sold in advance at Bryant McLeod Ltd., Realty World, Fairfield Harbour, Van Baars Gallery, Athlete’s Corner and Suzanne’s Craftory. Tickets will also be on sale at the door. The “informance” in Vanceboro on Sunday is free and open to the public. Any Vanceboro area resident may enter the contest. Anyone interested should register their name, address, and phone number on a contest form. These forms may be found in your local merchant’s stores. You may also register by calling Peggy Buck at 244-1511. Some of the quaUties that the judges will look for in each yard are: neat and trimmed shrubbery, neat flowers, trimmed sidewalk and/or driveway edges, neatly mowed lawn, and neat street edges, and ditch banks.
