Ill isiw-Tiwiiiii II I • ' T~T"ii—iMmism Training Offered For Citizen Activists As North Carolina faces an ever-increasing array of environmental issues—from hazardous waste facilities to peat mining-local citizens are becoming more vocai. An effort is now underway to help Tar Heels direct their energies more efficiently. The Environmental Action Workshop, to be held May 3 in Fayetteviiie, is designed to help concerned citizens who may not always know where to turn, who to talk to, or how to get help and information for dealing with iocal environ mental controversies. It will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p;m. at Methodist College, with a $5 registration fee. The Environmental Action Workshop is sponsored by the Conservation Council of North Carolina and the Durham- based Institute for Southern Studies. The program was developed by the Environ mental Resources Project at the University of North Oaraiina-Chapel Hill. Methodist College is the host, and the Pamlico-Tar River Foundation of Washing ton, N.C. and the Cape Fear River Research Institute of Fayetteville are cosponsors. "If you don't know where you’re going, you'll probably end up somewhere else," the worjcshop slogan says. The program is designed to help inexperienced activists get involved in conservation and pubiic heaith issues in eastern and central N.C. Dr. Richard Andrews, Director of the UNC Institute for Environmentai Studies, will provide an overview of state government boards and agencies affecting the environment. Participants wiil then break into smali groups for hands-on case study sessions based on actuai N.C. controversies involving radioactive waste, water poliution, land use planning, wetlands protection, and hazardous waste. Action plans developed by the individual groups will then by compared and analyzed. In the afternoon, partici pants wiil choose from among skill-building workshops in working with the media, legisiators, administrative agencies, and scientific and technical experts. There will also be a session on conflict reisolution. Case study and skill workshop leaders include representatives of conserva tion organizations, govern ment agencies, and universi ties. The entire workshop will be oriented specifically toward average citizens. The idea for the program began at a meeting last fall of representa tives of 30 N.C. environmental organizations. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. May 3 in the Science Building at Methodist Coilege. Thecollege is on U.S. 401 north of Fayetteviiie (5400 Ramsey St.). Lunch wiii be availabe at the college. And that cuddly puppies must be traihed and walked regularly and licensed - and forgiven for muddy paws now and then. We know you wouidn’t own a pet unless you knew you could give it the best of care. We just want you to know that when you are ready - we’ll be there to help you select a new family 4 legged friend. See you at the open house! Free surprise gift given to everyone adopting a new 4 legged family friend of "Pet Tabs" vitiamin samples.
