Firemen Get Awards 16 TO RECEIVE CERTIFICATES FROM RED CROSS FRIDAY Sixteen members of the Roanoke Rapids Fire Department will be awarded First Aid certificates by the American Red Cross in a ceremony which will be held at the court room of the Municipal Building at 7:30 p.m. this Friday. Those who will receive the cer tificates, showing they have passed the Standard Course of Red Cross First Aid to the injured are fire men: Godwin T. Lane, Buck Whit by, Joseph C. Justice, William W. Jones, John J. Ingram, W. A. Hoggard, Esmond S. Hasty, Char ley R. Harlow, Herbert B. Duke, Cyrus D. Camp, Charley L. Bris tow, Richard P. Bounds, Albert Spruill, William A. Wright, Robert Sledge and John A. Lipscomb. A program is being arranged to which the public is invited and will include talks by Mayor Kelly Jen kins, Chief Jack Lipscomb, First Aid Instructor Sherrod Crumpler and the awarding of the certifi cates by the Rev. Gordon L. Price, Chairman of the Roanoke Rapids Chapter. The following letter was received by Mr. Price from the national headquarters of the American Red Cross: My dear Mr. Price: You will find enclosed, for coun ter-signature and delivery, sixteen Standard Course First Aid certifi cates for members of the Fire De partment in Roanoke Rapids, who completed their training on Octo ber 29 with instructor S. H. Crump ler. We are also sending you the 1938 appointment for Mr. Crumpler to cover further training he may give in your chapter area during the coming year. In answer to your inquiry as to the possibility of our providing in signia for firemen, we should call to your attention that our require ment for the distribution of the sleeve emblem is that the Stand ard and Advanced First Aid Course shall have been completed. If you will let us know the names of the seventeen men desiring the in signia and at the same time indi cate when and where they com pleted the desired training, giving us the name of the instructor, we will be glad to give immediate consideration to your order. We make this request, because we are not in a position to issue the Fiist Aid insignia unless we can have the complete details. Very sincerely yours, Richard W. Thrush, Assistant Director First Aid and Life Saving National Headquarters Eastern Star Enfield Meet Mrs. Mary K. Fleet, District Deputy Grand Matron of the 4th District O. E. S. of North Carolina, made her official visit to Enfield Chapter No. 183 on Thursday eve ning. Mrs. Fleet made a very interest ing address on the work of the Order. Short talks were made by Mr. Fleet, associate Patron of Ly dia Chapter No. 109. Mrs. Smith, Worthy Matron of Lydia Chapter, Mrs. Etheridge, conductress of Ly dia Chapter, and Mrs. Brooks. Mrs. Fleet announced thsflf the Worthy Grand Matron, Mrs. Alice B. Cul pepper, of Elizabeth City, will make her official visit to Enfield Chapter on December the 9th, and urged all members to attend this important meeting. After the chapter closed in due form hot chocolate and wafers were served. Enfield Miss Blanche Moss spent Thanks giving at her home in High Point. E. L. Smith was at Burlington for Thanksgiving. Miss Ruth Barnes, of Bailey, vis ited relatives here last week. Miss Helen Barney was at Elon College for the Thanksgiving holi days. Miss Vivian Rives, student at E. C.T.C. at Greenville, visited at her home during the holidays last week. Miss Doris Thorne of Rocky Mt. spent a few days last week with her grandmother, Mrs. George T. Thorne. Miss Ida Privette, of Spring Hope, visited Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Sher vette Jr. last Sunday. Supt. and Mrs. H. M. Lynch and little daughter, Virginia Anne, vis ited relatives in Lynchburg last week. Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey, of Golds boro, visited Mrs. Jeffrey’s sister. Mrs. Sam T. Habel, last week-end. Miss Gene Bobbitt, student at Richmond, Va., spent Thanksgiving with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. E. Bobbitt. Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Moss and two attractive little sons have moved from Statesville to live with Miss Virginia Moss at their home near Enfield. Misses Elizabeth Britt, Eloise Hardison, Mildred Andrews, Louise Bennette, and Sarah Pope return ed to Raleigh to school at Meredith Monday after the Thanksgiving holidays at their home. Mr. and Mrs. Walker Hunter, of Schenectady, N. Y., Miss Clyde Hunter and Dr. Thomas Hunter, of Henderson, spent the Thanksgiving holidays with their mother, Mrs. W. F. Hunter. Mrs. J. B. Britt, Miss Annie Mae Sherrod and Mrs. Leonard Mat thews spent Monday in Raleigh. The Parent-Teacher Association will meet in regular session on Monday afternoon, Dec. 6th, in the school auditorium at three o'clock. A splendid program has been pre pared and everyone is requested to be present for this meeting. Miss Irma Louise Braswell, stu dent at Norfolk College, and Mr. Harold Braswell ,of Rocky Mount, spent last week-end with their mother, Mrs. Nannie Lee Braswell. Mr. and Mrs. Jack White of Wake Forest spent the holidays last week with Dr. and Mrs. F. M. Parker. Miss Daphney Sherrod returned to the business school in Raleigh on Monday after visiting Mr. and Mrs. W. N. Sherrod. Ebenezer Iley Barnes of Phillipsburg, Pa. is visiting his parents here, Mr. and Mrs. W. I. Barnes. George Arrington of Fort Mon roe, Va. has been spending some time here visiting relatives. Jimmie Atkinson of Garysburg visited Hyder F. Crawley last Wed nesday. Mrs. A. E. Crawley and son, I Roy, motored to Caledonia State Farm last Wednesday p.m. Mrs. Russell Dickens and sons returned with them to spend Thanksgiving holidays. Mrs. M. P. Crawley spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. H. O. Crawley. Miss Nora Crawley, Mrs. A. E. Crawley, Mrs. H. F. Dickens and Mrs. Russell Dickens visited Mr. and Mrs. Jack Taylor near Enfield Thanksgiving. Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Kennemur of Roanoke Rapids spent Thanks giving with Mr. and Mrs. M. P. Crawley and family. 'Halifax [ Miss Mae Belle Gardner and Miss Irene Ayers spent last week-end in Roanoke Rapids. Miss Elizabeth Wall spent the week-end with Lucy Mae Gardner. Norwood Pittman attended the Duke-Pitt game Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Jordan an nounce the birth of a son, Kenneth Ray, on Nov. 22. Miss Mildred Jordan will become the bride of Mr. Norwood Pittman on the 7th of December. After a short trip they will make tneir home with Mr. Pittman’s parents. Parsons - Lewis Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Parsons of Woodruff, S. C. announce the en gagement of their daughter, Mary Elizabeth, to Kermon Lewis of Roanoke Rapids, N. C. The wed ding will take place in January.
