SECTION "G" SECTION "C" DIAL R-326 ALL DEPOTS THURSDAY, MAY 18, 1939_SECTION C—PAGE 1 "SUICIDE" HAYES HURT BUT RETURNS HERE SUNDAY AFT. Thousands of spectators who have seen durable “Suicide” Bob Hayes, the Georgia daredevil, flirt with death in his Hell Driving shows have left the fairgrounds with, besides weak knees and flut tering hearts, the question in the back of their minds, “When is that fool going to quit such a racket and settle down- He’s going to get killed if he don’t . . ” Performing last week before a crowd of some 10,000 people in Rocky Mount, Hayes was injured in doing his sensational roll over. However, after remaining in the hospital for several days he has sufficiently recovered and intends to shoot the works in his return performance at the Halifax Coun ty fairgrounds, Sunday afternoon beginning at 3 o’clock. Highlighting the all new show, Sunday, will be the 10 car jump in which Hayes will take his regular stock automobile and attempt to clear the mass of cars going at a speed of 80 miles an hour. “If ev erything works out all right,” he said, “I’m not so much afraid of clearing the cars but I don’t know about coming down. That’s what always worries me.” Spectators who witnessed the last performance here will recall that he narrowly averted serious injury when his car careened against the fence after clearing the 8 cars. There is no doubt but that the same thing can happen again since he will have to be going at a greater rate of speed to clear the ten cars. “Suicide" will roll one of his cars x end over end and side over side as the climax to a 2 hour performance. That is the only time he is sched uled to turn over but there is al ways the possibility that the car may get out of control and turn over on any of the other stunts. Another brand new thriller that has never been seen in this terri tory will be the double firewall crash. Hayes will place two solid boardwalls 12 feet apart in front of an eighteen foot ramp, race his car down the straightaway at a mile a minute speed and crash into it hoping that Lady fate will be riding with him. “Swede” Cooper, one of the Hell Driving troupe, will be down in the middle of the track and let Hayes drive a 2 ton truck over his body, protected only by a narrow plank. This will be the second time that Cooper has tried this dangerous feat. The first time in Roanoke, Va., the back wheel slipped, missed the plank, and ran across his hips. ir ne doesn't get hurt doing this stunt young Cooper will partici pate in the head-on collision, which is also scheduled in the day’s pro gram. Cooper and his associate Hell Driver will get into two old cars and crash them together in front of the grandstand, both of the drivers remaining in the cars. Wild Bill Reams will be missed in the performance Sunday as he was seriously hurt last week in Rocky Mount doing a side-on col lision. Unfortunately he lost his left eye and was cut up about the face. He will remain in the hospital for a period of several weeks be fore he will be able to perform again. Other stunts to be included on the 2 hour program will be the hood ride, double slide for life and many other daring features never seen here before. Another crowd of 5,000 people is expected to attend and a special detail of police will be on hand to take care of the crowd. Mrs. Selden Assistant Court Clerk Mrs. Sue E. Selden, deputy clerk of the Superior Court of Halifax County since May, 1986, has been elevated to the position of Assistant Clerk of the Superior Court by Clerk A. Leonidas Hux.
