FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF JAFFE STORES IN CITY IS OBSERVED THURSDAY H. I. Jaffe Associated Stores, home of Reliable Clothiers, 1021 Roanoke Avenue, held a first an niversary celebration in the city today, Thursdp.y, October 17th. The program included the personal ap pearance of Tex Dean and his Carefree Cowboys, with the boys furnishing music and entertain ment at the store throughout the day and at a special "birthday par ty" Thursday night. The event had been widely advertised and was well attended. Many free souvenirs were dis tributed to patrons and visitors of the store at the Fall Opening Thursday night, and to those who were unable to attend, a double page advertisement in this issue of the Herald announces that the store has saved a souvenir for them. The anniversary celebration and fall opening will continue at the store for the next ten days with special values offered. Although the H. I. Jaffe concern is comparatively new it has rapid ly gained the confidence of the buying public and today there are six of the establishments, all open ed for business since September of last year. The local H. I. Jaffe store was opened about the middle of Octo ber last year, and is capably man aged by J. B. "Buck" Taylor, with F. D. Woolum serving as assistant m α πα o-ûi· H. I. Jaffe, owner of the Jaffe stores, declares that his guide in business from a small "grafonola" shop at Suffolk has been solely that of "The Golden Rule." He has enlarged his business from its humble beginning to the largest individually owned furniture store in the South, with more than 50, 000 square feet of floor space, and the largest clothing store of its type in the southern area. The Roanoke Rapids store has been a highly successful venture for Jaffe, he says, and he looks forward to his continued expansion in the city. Flowing Gold At New Theatre For Sunday & Monday That ace character actor, John Garfield, is teamed with star Pat O'Brien in "Flowing Gold" a stir ring story of the oil fields, which will be presented to Sunday-Mon day audiences at the New Theatre, in Weldon. Frances Farmer has the leading feminine role. "Flowing Gold" is a spectacular story of the oil fields, showing the enormous chances operators of the great mid-continent take, with the love story of Garfield and Miss Farmer as a romantic background. Tuesday - Wednesday brings the showing of the long-to-be-remem bered film, "Rebecca" with Lau rence Olivier and Joan Fontaine in the leading roles. This film has been one of the most-discussed pictures of the current season. "Maryland" comes to the screen of the New Theatre, Weldon, for showing on Thursday and Friday of next week. Presented in gor geous technicolor, the famous race horse story features Brenda Joyce, John Payne and Walter Brennan. Saturday is double-feature day with Charles Starrett and Iris Meredith in "Stagecoach", and Pe ter Lorre in "The Stranger on the Third Floor". Christian Church REV. T. Ε. "ARE SIN, DISEASE, AND DEATH REAL?" was the subject of the Lesson-Sermon in all Christ ian Science Churches and Societies on Sunday, October 13, 1940. The Golden Text was from Psalms 68:20, "He that is our God is the God of salvation; and unto God the Lord belong the issues from death." Among the citations which com prise the Lesson-Sermon was the following from the Bible: "Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. Confess your faults one to anoth er and pray for one another that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth mucl, (James 5: 13, 16). Miss Edwards Honored Miss Josephine Speight honored Miss Edith Edwards on her sev entieth birthday with a party at her home. Games were played and refreshments consisting of fruit punch, peanuts, and cakes were served to the following: Misses Edith Edwards, Edith Revelle, Madeline Thomason, Josephine Westbrook, Libby Dean Clemmer, Ann McNeil, Miriam Mountford, Margaret Harris, Corrinne Satter waite, Dorothy Webb, Margaret Boyd, Geraldine Radcliffe, Jean Shell, and Josephine Speight, Free man Burke, Doyle Jernigan, "Pig" Riggan, Gordon Dobbins, Roy Simms' Harry Edwards, Elmer Reaves and "Hot Shot" Speight. Miss Edwards received many useful gifts. Mrs. Murphrey Hostess i Mrs. W. E. Murphrey was host ess on Tuesday evening at a din ner given at her home on Hamil ton street. Lovely arrangements of fall flowers added much beauty, Covers were laid for eight and a three course dinner was served after which bridge was played un til ten thirty. Mrs. W. G. Cherry was winner of the high score and received two lovely ash trays. Mrs. S. E. Crew won for bingo and re ceived a linen guest towel. Guests included Mesdames W. G. Cherry, W. C. Williams, S. E. Crew, K. A. Forrest, J. R. Lupton, W. V. White, W. A. China, and M. C. Maddrey. Mr. and Mrs. Bush Hux and Misses Vergie Elmore, Rpsa Tay lor and Catherine Burnette spent Saturday in Norfolk. Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Dickens, of Enfield, announce the birth and death of twins, a boy and a girl, on Tuesday, October the first, nineteen hundred and forty, in the Rocky Mount Sanatarium. Mrs. Henry Cuthrell entertained at a bridge party Friday evening. Miss Eunice Cuthrell was host ess Thursday evening having as guests members of the "Twelve arV* One" Bridge Club and a num ber of other friends. Mr. and Mrs. John Finley White, of Enfield, announce the birth of a son, John Finley White, Jr., on Wednesday, October the second, nineteen hundred and forty. Mrs. White was formerly Miss Ruth E lizabeth Dickens, of Enfield. She and her infant son are at Park View Hospital in Rocky Mount. Mrs. A. C. Nicuols, Jr., was host ess to a number of friends at a bridge party in her home Wednes day evening. Contract was played progressively at four tables with Mrs. Theodore Harrison and Mrs. Myra Mann winning high score prizes. Mrs. J. R. Matthews entertained at a club luncheon Thursday at one o'clock. Mrs. Joe Edwards assist ed in serving a two course lunch eon after which five progressions of contract were enjoyed. Nurses At Meeting Misses Janie Lassiter, Helen Ap ple, Ava Wood, Mesdames Gilbert Brown, Loftin Moody left here Wednesday morning for Winston Salem where they will attend the North Carolina Nurses Association meeting. C, Sunday-Monday Oct. 20-21 "THEY DRIVE BY NIGHT" Thursday-Friday, Oct. 24 -25 "SOUTH OF PAGO PAGO" NEGRO INJURED IN WRECK, BROTHER BEATS UP DRIVER Hannah Lashley, colored young man of the Gaston section, is in the Roanoke Rapids Hospital suf fering from a head and shoulder injury sustained in an automobile accident on the Lawrenceville road Sunday afternoon. Joe Sam Moore, colored driver of the machine, is being held pending the outcome of the injured man's condition. Being held also, indirectly as a result of the wreck, is Willie Lash ley, brother of the injured Negro. Willie Lashley, it is reported, be came angered at Joe Sam Moore for turning over and injuring his brother and proceeded to beat Moore about the head with a stick. In the fracas a young Negro girl was also struck over the head by Lashley. The accident occurred Sunday afternoon when the Moore car and the Willie Lashley car were traveling in the same direction on the Lawrenceville road. Moore lost control of his machine and it turned over. Both drivers denied that they were racing. Hannah Lashley remained un conscious until today, when he be came partly conscious. Celebrates Birthday James Edward Warren celebrat ed his tenth birthday last Tuesday afternoon, October 8. After games were enjoyed the guests were served lemonade, cakes, peanuts, mints and candy. Favors were also given. Among those present were Jo Ann Bra sington, Jackie Williams, Joseph ine Ellis, Lois Taylor, Rebie Davis, Mary Ann Dickens and Barbara Zeiler; Clyde Camp Jr., Glen Gur ley, Jr., Bootsie Marks, David Wheeler, Jimmy Zeiler, Johnny Lynch, Bill Bunting Jr., Linwood Harris and Wylie Warren Jr. James received many attractive gifts.
